The Bottom Line This is an open invitation to write about anything Martial Arts related. Let's see how diverse a group of reviews we can build, and Whose Kung Fu is Strongest!
Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting! An Invitation to a Write off.
Several events have conspired to make me consider this Write Off; the tragic death of David Carradine, the anniversary of the death of Bruce Lee on July 20, the success of my First Write Off. At any rate, I thought I would take as my theme all the wonder martial arts movies that have inspired a generation; from Enter the Dragon, to Karate Kid, to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The works of Jean Claude Van Damme, Steven Segall, and Chuck Norris are all fair game. In fact, if there is human conflict, settled man to man and hand to hand, have at it. Ninja, Wire Fu, even boxing movies are fair game. I certainly think of the Rocky Series as being prime examples of a Martial Art, even if it is not particularly Eastern.
Martial Arts movies range from glorious exploitations of violence, to sentimental explorations of boys becoming men. They range from Oscar Worthy, to Mystery Science Theater 3 Thousand fodder. They have shaped our psyche since Bruce Lee burst onto the screen as Kato, the Green Hornet's manservant and side kick, emphasis on kick. Now Tae Kwon Do Dojos dot the landscape in small town America. Comic Book heroes are more than barroom brawlers, and according to Joss Whedon, vampirism comes with a complete set of Jeet Kun Do moves.
And it goes beyond movies; books range from the Art of Jeet Kun Do by Bruce Lee, to The Art of War and biographies of Chuck Norris. Even music can find a link, from Carl Douglas to Wu Tang Clan. And of course, this is a natural for Sports, from fighting pads and athletic supporters, to Ninja-to and nunchuks.
So, let's take the months of July and August and see Whose Kung Fu is the Strongest!
