All children need routine vision screening to rule out Amblyopia.

...was diagnosed with the exact form of Amblyopia as Belle a year ago. The scary thing was that he was already wearing glasses. After a year with his ped opthamologist I had a feeling we needed another opinion. Imagine my response when the new ped opthamologist diagnosed him with Amblyopia. The patch was so tramatic at first, but he's eased into, and it's easier for him now.

Hugs to Belle. I know how difficult it is for them. :(

back in the day, we tried the "patch" at home at night to strengthen my left eye and I wore glasses with the safety type frame and an elastic band around the bows to hold them on because I wanted to tear off the glasses.

It was a hard time. My left eye is still judged "legally" blind with 20/80 or 20/90 vision and my right 20/30. So, anything ever happens to my right eye...the left will either step in, or I will be legally blind.

I can appreciate the message you are putting out there. It's important, but they never really tell you about it as a parent for something to watch for and I am so happy you put something on eps about it.

Thanks for spreading the word!

My oldest daughter, now an adult, had this and I could not accept it when she was born. Thank God for new modern technology detecting this problem. I did start with the patch as advised by the doctor which did not help.

Great review.

Kimmie,
There is actually a high incidence of Amblyopia which overlaps with Autism. Feel free to email me!

Awe, you will have to keep us updated on her progress! So scary! Caleb has never been able to be tested visually with his autism/apraxia, and I have actually noticed he closes his one eye once in awhile (I thought it was a tic, he has mild tourettes as well).

Thanks to your tip, I am going to see if they can do they same test on him that they do on babies and small toddlers. The fear of the unknown....

Well, my best to you & yours! Great essay and information! Thanks! :)

for sharing this important and informative information.

My daughter was screened in Kindergarten but her test came back normal. I am a little concerned though as she does have an eye that one doctor referred to as weak. The Dr recommended that Elianah wear a patch but getting her to do so is almost impossible.

I know there are no other "advice" reviews to compare yours to but I thought you did a fantastic job in explaining this condition which in my opinion deserved a "MH" rating.

Again, thanks for sharing.

My daughter was diagnosed with this as well, although hers was not nearly as advanced as your daughter's. Her Kindergarten teacher noticed that she was squinting a bit with one eye and tilting her head when reading. My daughter's is a mild case, and didn't need an eye patch, but six years later, she still has glasses to help correct it.

Both my pediatrician and my optometrist have eye charts for young children with shapes on them so if they are too young to know their alphabet correctly, they can still get tested.

I was just talking w/my husband, wondering when our 3 year should see an eye doctor (since we're both severely near-sighted) and neither of us thought we needed to bring her in this early. Your review is a wake-up call. I hope your daughter's vision improves with the treatment that she's getting!

My daughters each have a friend with amblyopia, both discovered during kindergarten screening. Early testing is so important!

Thank God for those screenings at school that most schools give children.

I never heard of Amblyopia before until I read your review. I am sure some other people haven't either so it's very good you wrote about it.

Sometimes kids today are so busy that they aren't aware of their little health issues; they just figure it's all natural. I know a few little children like that. Perhaps that's why your daughter never complained. Why it wasn't detected by her doctor is beyond me but maybe your daughter had ways to the fact she had a problem as you stated.

All in all, I am very glad it was detected and you have made others aware with your very helpful review.

Thanks.

My best...
