Back To School 2009 -- Supplies for Being Off to College/University
Jul 06 '09 (Updated Jul 23 '09)
The Bottom Line Read the review and be informed for what you need for campus life at college and/or unversity.
Face it today you need lots of different items in order to succeed in Higher Learning.
Technology Supplies
A computer that is Internet ready and has a word program so that you may perform research and use spelling and grammar check on papers, book reports, etc. Preferably a Laptop so that you can take your work on the go where ever you need to be.
A printer is nice to have and typically you can get a basic printer for twenty bucks or less at Wal-Mart. Printer paper and printer ink if you intend on using a printer, and be sure to have plenty of both as you can go through a cartridge of printer ink in two or three months if you do a lot of printing; however, a case of paper should last you a couple of years.
I would recommend buying a flash drive such as a SanDisk Cruzer Micro 16GB or SanDisk Cruzer Micro 4GB and the bigger the better so you can keep all your typed papers/reports as back up in case your computer crashes or if the hard copy (paper report) for some reason gets lost or ruined or just if needed it for future reference.
You will need a mouse and mouse pad (granted you are not using a trackball mouse).
External hard drive for backing up your computer and school documents is essential.
A battery back-up (such as an APC or Cyberpower) to prevent loss of work in the advent of working on a computer or laptop for school work when power goes out.
You will need an Ethernet cable for dsl internet access in your dorm or a phone cable for dial-up so you can connect to the internet is essential for saving time and being productive.
A webcam for chatting with friends and family is a great way to keep in touch.
Blank DVDs or blank CDs for assignments requiring power point slides, etc. to be demonstrated in class or turned in as an assignment or both.
Basic Academic Supplies
A calculator such as a TI-83 Plus for complex math homework and tests.
A five different colors of highlighters for highlighting key concepts & terms in books, and notes is key for successful studying.
Pens in blue, black, and red are very useful.
Mechanical pencils, regular pencils, and pencil sharpener for tests and homework will help you save time.
Note cards for making flash cards for studying.
Notebooks and notebook paper for notes and brainstorming.
Backpack for carrying your books to and fro classes.
Stapler and spare staples for keeping papers in order.
Scissors, tape, and glue for projects.
Hygiene Essentials
Anti-perspirant / deodorant is a must so you won't be avoided from stinking.
Shampoo and/or conditioner to help keep you looking your best.
A set of 5 of the following wash cloths and towels so you do not have to do laundry every other day and is a neccessity.
Shaving supplies such as razors and/or an electric shaver (or trimmer), and shaving gel (shaving soap or shaving cream). Some of my favorites for when shaving and trimming is Gillette Mach 3 Turbo Cartridges or Gillette Mach3, Panasonic ER 389 Beard Trimmer, Gillette Series After Shave Gel Sensitive Skin, Afta Clear Gel After Shave Skin Conditioner for Sensitive Skin 3 oz, and Gillette Series After Shave Splash Cool Wave 3.5 oz.
Electric toothbrush, toothpaste, mouth wash, and floss to keep up with oral hygiene are essential to staying healthy.
Toilet paper and tissues are needed for the obvious reasons.
Face and body lotion to keep your skin comfy and to have one less possible distraction.
Q-tips are key to helping keep your ears and belly button clean as well as other uses.
Flip flops for when you shower or risk getting foot fungus.
For the ladies all the essential feminine hygiene products is a must.
Bedding & Related
Alarm clock because you are on your own and need to be to classes on time.
Blankets, sheets, pillows, pillow cases, comforter, and a mattress pad.
Apparel
Undershirts, underwear, socks, coat, hat, sweaters, gloves, pants, shorts, jeans, swimsuits, gym apparel, suit or dress, shoes, sandals, and flip flops so you can dress appropriately for the various activities held on campus.
If you find your shoes are not as comfortable as you would like them to be I would recommend the following products: ProFoot SuperSport™ Arch Support for sore (or fallen) arches or ProFoot Triad Orthotic Inserts for providing excellent foot support in three areas: Heels, Arches, Ball-of-Feet.
Laundry
A clothes hamper or laundry bag is very helpful to hold dirty clothes until you are ready to do laundry.
Laundry Detergent so you can wash clothes.
Misc. stuff you may need
Microwave
Mini Fridge
Sewing kit
Cleaning Products
Iron
Mini Ironing Board
