The Bottom Line The top few are instant classics, but 2007 was a dud all around.

Quite possibly the most difficult year to rank to date, 2007 was a year chock full of disappointments and letdowns. It's funny, sometimes you think you know what your top five movies will be as they start hitting the theaters, and then you see a list full of movies you never thought you'd see at the end of the year.

The Back 10:

20.
Bobby, 19. Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, 18. Mr. Brooks, 17. The Bucket List, 16. Hot Fuzz, 15. Transformers, 14. TMNT, 13. Beowulf, 12. Smokin' Aces, 11. Stardust.

The Top 10 Movies for 2007:

10. The Mist. Stephen King movies generally do not fare too well as movies, but this was an exception. As a fan of the original short story/novella, I went into the movie expecting the worst. With the exception of the ending, The Mist was mostly true to the novelized version and was honest to God spooky.

9. Superbad. Judd Apatow and crew's movies are starting to wear on me, to be honest. This, however, was one of the last truly great comedies that they produced. It's a classic high school flick that's a laugh a minute.

8. Alpha Dog. This is the sort of movie that makes you want to go out and punch a criminal in the face afterwards. Based on the true story of a teenage boy kidnapped due to a dispute his brother had with a local drug dealer, Alpha Dog is a light-hearted movie that suddenly takes a turn for the worse as the movie goes on. As the movie becomes more serious, you start to hope it doesn't end like you think it will.

7. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Picking up right where Goblet of Fire left off, Order of the Phoenix starts strong and never lets up. Based on these last two movies alone, I am now a Harry Potter fan and can't wait for the next one.

6. Knocked Up. The greatest thing about this movie is that it was actually a better drama than comedy. I didn't find myself laughing out loud as often as I usually do during Seth Rogen films, but Knocked Up ended up being just a great all around movie.

5. Juno. I had a busy year in 2007 and actually didn't even hear about Juno until it was released on DVD. I picked it up in the bargain bin at the local video store for a few bucks despite never seeing it before and came away impressed.

4. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Ever since Rent my opinion of musicals has changed drastically. Throw in a homicidal barber hell-bent on revenge and I am sold.

3. 300. Not the deepest movie of the year in any way, shape, or form but 300 is just flat out entertaining. This is one of those movies that you pop in when you just want to forget about everything and be entertained for a couple of hours.

2. No Country for Old Men. Honestly, I thought I would be let down by the abrupt ending, but this is a movie that had to end that way. Following Cormac McCarthy's 2005 novel almost to the letter, No Country for Old Men is an enthralling movie with some of the most interesting movie personalities I have seen in some time.

1. 3:10 to Yuma. Shocked? Don't be. 3:10 to Yuma was an easy choice as the best movie of 2007 with only No Country for Old Men even coming close to consideration. Modern westerns seem to fail more than succeed, so it was good to see one finally deliver. Russell Crowe is at his villainous best and Christian Bale is outstanding as his opposite in the film. 3:10 to Yuma was not only the best movie of 2007, but is one of the better films that I have seen in several years.

And finally ... on to 2008 ...
