The Bottom Line Let them find their own series of books, don't try to get them to like yours.
Epinions asks: Most children spend much more time watching television than reading books. What are some good ways to teach children to love to read? What strategies are most effective, and which ones should be avoided? Getting kids to love reading: I think that you should start early. When they are infants and toddlers, set aside time for reading to them. Snuggle with them and have the little picture books. Show them the pictures and talk about what they are. As they get older, start reading Early Reader books to them. Make it interesting, change you voice for each character, maybe even act out the story. I think that as they are older, say around the age of two or so, read them bedtime stories. The more you read to them, the more interested they will be in books. Reading on their own: Once they are able to read on their own, let them choose books to read. Their interests might not match yours, so don't try to push what you like on them. Even though they are reading on their own, most kids still like the "snuggle time" with mom or dad. And they also still like to be read to. This is when you can read books you liked as a kid to them, I've read Tom Sawyer, Charlotes Web, The Littles, The Borrowers to name a few. The Library and book stores Many book stores have areas where you can read a book or two. This is a good place to let them look through a new series, to see if they would like it. My daughter found out that even though she said she didn't like Captain Underpants, there were some good books in the series. It was just a couple books that she didn't like. The library is also a good place to go to. There is such a wide variety of books to look through that most kids don't want to leave for a while! We go there and they will read a short book at the library, then choose two books to bring home. Used book stores I love going to used book stores! We get such bargains that the whole family buys books! So, what should be avoided? In my opinion, you shouldn't force a book on your child. That is when they will get defiant and possibly not want to read that much. |
