Ten Best Movies Ever

Jul 26 '09

The Bottom Line These are the films that I watch over and over again. I find them all to be entertaining and heartwarming.

1. A River Runs Through It is a 1992 film based on the novel written by Norman Maclean, which is actually a semi-autobiographical novel. The film is set in the town of Missoula, Montana, and spans the time beginning in 1919 and leading into the early days of the Great Depression. The story tells us about brothers Paul and Norman Maclean, sons of a Presbyterian minister. Norman is the studious type while Paul turns out to be the rebellious one. The film begins in childhood and we watch as the boys grow up and come of age under the watchful eye of their father.  A major portion of the film is based on their love of fly-fishing for trout in the Blackfoot River. This is a film that made me fall in love with Montana, and it is a film that I have enjoyed watching over and over again.

2. Fried Green Tomatoes is a 1991 film based on the novel written by Flannie Flagg titled Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café. The timeline begins in the 1980s, while the stories take place beginning in 1919 and also in the 1930s. The story begins in an Alabama nursing home when Evelyn Couch, a visitor, meets up with Ninny Threadgoode, one of the a residents who doesn't plan on staying very long. A chance encounter between the two beings to blossom into friendship as Ninny tells Evelyn the story behind the Whistle Stop Café and the friendship between owners Idgie Threadgoode and Ruth Jamison. Evelyn is enthralled with Ninny's storytelling abilities and begins to visit her on a regular basis just to hear her stories. This is a film that is well written, and will tug at your heartstrings, and leave you wanting to watch it over and over again.

3. Coal Miner's Daughter is the 1980 film based on the true-life story of country singer Loretta Lynn. She was born into poverty in Butcher Holler, Kentucky to a father who earned his living by the sweat of his brow in the coalmines of eastern Kentucky.  She married at the tender age of thirteen and became a mother to four children before the age of seventeen. Her husband, Mooney Lynn, was the man behind her success. He was the one who encouraged her to sing in the honky-tonks and cut a tape and then went on the road with her and tirelessly promoted the record.  The rest, as they say, is history. Loretta Lynn went on to become one of country's music's best lady country singers. This is another film that I have watched over and over again, and I never tire of this true rags-to-riches story.

4. My Dog Skip is the 2000 film based on the autobiographical book My Dog Skip, which is written by Willie Morris about the love of his boyhood dog, Skip. If you have ever loved a dog you must see this film. The story takes place in Yazoo, Mississippi and tells the story a Willie, a lonely and only child, who endures the daily bullying of three schoolmates. All of that changes on his tenth birthday with the arrival of Skip, a Jack Russell terrier, who comes into his life and changes it forever.  Be sure to keep a box of tissues close by, as this is a story that will also tug at your heartstrings.

5. Sweet Dreams is the 1985 film, which tells the true life story of country music singer Patsy Cline. The film begins at a time when Patsy, who is unhappy in her current marriage, is busy singing in small town honky-tonks when she meets up with Charlie Dick, her future husband. Shortly afterwards Charlie is drafted into the Army while Patsy continues to sing and eventually discovers she is pregnant with their first child. The film portrays an abusive relationship between the two and the struggles that come with trying to have a career and raise a family at the same time. Eventually Patsy meets up with Randy Hughes, the manager who helped her to great success in the music business. Unfortunately her life was cut short in the plane crash that took her life when she was only thirty years old in March of 1963.

6. A Beautiful Mind is the 2001 film based on the life of Professor John Nash. The story begins during the early years of John's life at Princeton where he works mathematical problems with a feverish pitch and he begins to develop his mathematical theories. Early on we see that John begins to develop paranoid schizophrenia and we watch as thee delusional episodes become a burden to both his wife and friends. The story is painful to watch at times, but fascinating in the story that unfolds.

7. Men of Honor is the 2000 film based on the true life story of Master Chief Petty Officer Carl Brashear, the first African-American Master Diver in the United States Navy. In 1948 Brashear leaves behind his sharecropper father to join the U.S. Navy. Along the way he meets Chief Billy Sunday, a tough and fierce commander, who appears to be a racist bully, but surprise us in the end.  This has to be one of my favorite films of all times. Cuba Gooding Jr. does an excellent job of portraying Brashear and showing the sheer determination he must have had to overcome the obstacles for a black man during that time. I would highly recommend this film.

8. Sweet Home Alabama is the 2002 film staring Reese Witherspoon and Josh Lucas. This is the story of two childhood sweethearts who despite the turmoil in-between do eventually end up happily ever after. The two marry after Melanie becomes pregnant as a teenager, but she leaves their hometown of Alabama after she miscarries. She stays away for seven years during which time Jake makes "something of himself". She returns to town seeking a divorce in order to marry her current love, but falls in love all over again with her childhood sweetheart. This is a fun, romantic comedy that I have enjoyed watching time and time again.

9. Homecoming is a 1996 film, which tells the story of the Tillerman children as they are forced to fend for themselves after their mother, suffering from mental illness, abandons them in a mall parking lot. They travel many miles on foot in search of family, which eventually leads them to their grandmother's home in Crisfield, Maryland. Anne Bancroft does a excellent job of portraying the cranky old grandmother who doesn't want to be bothered raising anymore children, and has forgotten the simply joys that children can bring to a home.  This is a wonderful film and one that I would highly recommend.

10. The Family Stone is a 2005 film centered around the annual Christmas celebration of the Stone family. This year favored son Everett is bringing girlfriend Meredith home to propose with the heirloom ring promised to him by his mother who has a secret of her own. Meredith is played by Sarah Jessica Parker, a conservative, uptight executive who ends up looking like a fish out of water as the family has a little bit of fun at her expense.  This is another film that I have enjoyed watching again and again and one that I would highly recommend.
