Gandy,

Thanks for your comment. To this day, I still think about those basketball players and wonder what they became. It saddens me that I may never see them again; in five years in Fukuoka, I never encountered one of my former players, so it's much unlikely I'll run into any of them in the U.S.

I wish I could have had you come out to Hirado when I was there. You would have appreciated a countryside view of Japan. And, you would have fit in just fine on the basketball court. ;)

Keep reading, Gandy!

Hiya Kedsand1,

Really neat to finally read more about your experiences. I can tell you really cared about your students. Maybe they're on facebook! :-)

Flash,

Thanks again for your comment, though I can't take pride in a 102-4 result! :)

It is odd when I consider that I improved the most as a basketball player when I was in Japan, especially after Tsugasaki-sensei joined Hirado High School. Interestingly, I never really befriended Tsugasaki-sensei; he seemed to keep me at a distance, and I suppose I either reciprocated what I sensed or preemptively kept myself at a distance. In any case, we got along fine and he had the wherewithal to show up to my goodbye dinner.

Speaking of the goodbye dinner, such affairs are often obligatory gatherings that all teachers are expected to attend. However, I made it clear to Kenji (my supervisor), that I didn't want the goodbye party to be as such. So, in turn, many teachers didn't show up, especially Tagawa-sensei, who was my neighbor and who really disliked me; but, I was happy to see certain teachers that I thought didn't like me, but actually turned up.

Thanks again, Flash!

I'm like you and just love the sport of basketball. I thought you did an excellent job of explaining your experience with the Hirado basketball team. How many people can say that they helped coach a Japanese High School team and lost a game 102-4? I must admit I'm a little envious of your Japanese experience because you did something very few people do. Life is all about trying different things and no one can ever take away the time you spent in Japan.
