My Response To An Opinion About Ted Kennedy

Aug 26 '09

The Bottom Line My response to an opinion and comment I found re: the passing of Senator Edward "Ted" Kennedy...

It's official:

Ted Kennedy has lost his courageous battle with brain cancer, and I've just finished reading something about him that has most of its focus on what happened a little over 40 years ago that resulted in the tragic death of Mary Jo Kopechne.

This is a very serious issue, and it really wasn't handled in a fair manner--though I'm sure that Ted Kennedy wasn't the first person to get away with such a crime, wouldn't be the last, and that this kind of getting away with isn't always limited to the rich and famous--but it still needs to be addressed and not simply swept under the rug.

Ted Kennedy was a good man in most ways, but there were things that he did that made him far from being a perfect role-model.

One thing that disturbed me was how at least one person leaving a comment about the article already had him roasting in hell.

This is somebody's loved one about whom we're talking, and--while we don't need to paint him as the perfect saint--this is harsh, and it's not our place to judge.

Below is my own response...

I wasn't there to know what happened, so I don't know if an intentional crime were committed or not. This will be dealt with now between Ted and Jesus with no priest in the middle. No more chance for any B.S.

If he were drunk and this were an accident, driving drunk would be wrong in and of itself; even more wrong because a death was involved; and even more wrong than that because he tried to cover it up instead of coming clean.

If this were an intentional drowning to cover up a pregnancy or to keep Mary Jo from singing like a bird, Ted got away with murder, and he and Jesus will definitely need to talk a lot about that.

Of course, they will also talk about other things such as how Ted played a major role in the passing of The Civil Rights Bill so that filling station restrooms that looked like this:

Well-stocked, private, modern plumbing for white men and white women (gender separate)

Run down, no running water, no toilet paper, no lock on the door, unisex outhouse to be used by a class of people referred to as "Colored"

would become a thing of the past instead of being commonplace through the South, and where other elements of Martin Luther King's dream would eventually come true.

Nobody in our country would ever again have to sit in the back of the bus unless he/she wanted to and/or all of the other seats were taken.

No well-behaved families would ever again be turned away from motels with vacancies when they were tired or not served in restaurants when they were hungry.

No adults who didn't have prison records or some other reason besides skin color in their way would ever again be denied the right to vote in any state in the union.

A Black parent could truly say to his/her child: "You can be anything you want--even President of The United States!"

Ted and Jesus also are likely talking about how Ted held the family together in times of crisis and simply gave them lots of love and support at any time.

Also, they will talk about how Ted did eventually kick his drinking habit--the one that figured into that tragedy with Mary Jo--one day at a time, as well as how much he has matured over the years and how bravely he fought this last battle.

Perhaps, he will also be required to talk with Mary Jo about the happy marriage she never got to enter into; the kids she never got to have; and the grandkids she never got the chance to spoil--though I suppose that this thought has probably crossed his mind more times than we might realize during his earthly life.

Perhaps, by now, this time of judgment has already passed, and--not because he was ever perfect but because Jesus is--he's already enjoying a happy reunion with those family members who have gone on before him!
