The Bottom Line Definitive NIN-Deep Cuts is an Excellent Compilation of NIN's Finest Moments in their Albums. (4.5 out of 5)

The second part of the Definitive NIN series and the third release of the "seed" promo discography. The Definitive NIN-Deep Cuts is a collection of material focusing on some of Nine Inch Nails' famous album tracks that have been favorites among fans. While the original collection released in 2006 through torrent sites consisted of 19 tracks, an updated version through the official NIN iPhone application added five more tracks to the release. While its predecessor highlights the band's great singles and radio tracks. Deep Cuts highlights the band through their other moments from their various albums.

Opening the collection is Sunspots from With Teeth. With its brooding bass line, hollow drum fills from Dave Grohl, and Trent Reznor's somber vocals with haunting lyrics is one of the finer moments of the album as it provides a fantastic opener for the collection. From The Downward Spiral is the frenetic Heresy with its pummeling beats, driving rhythms, thrashing guitars, and nihilistic lyrics with the famous line "God is dead and no one cares" that is pure industrial-thrash. The title track to The Fragile is a haunting ballad with a slow, pounding rhythm that intensifies in the chorus as it marks as one of NIN's finest cuts. A live version of Terrible Lie from the And All That Could Have Been live album with its angst-ridden lyrics, bleeping synthesizer melodies and swoons, Reznor's engaging vocals, thrashing guitars, and hammering mid-tempo beats.

The smooth, brooding Piggy with its smooth bass line, bouncy rhythm, fearful lyrics, Reznor's calm vocals, and soothing keyboards to add an eerie quality to the song along with a closing drum performance by Reznor himself. The melodic yet throbbing Sanctified from Pretty Hate Machine, is one of Reznor's calm yet melancholic songs that featured soft, stuttering beats and droning guitars from Richard Patrick as it's one of Reznor's most beloved pop songs. The next two tracks from The Fragile are the melancholic-piano piece The Frail and the heavy, art-rock of The Wretched. The latter of which featured melodic synthesizers, a smooth mid-tempo rhythm, growling guitars, and Reznor's entrancing vocals with its sinister, dark lyrics. The Collector from With Teeth is a rocker with hard-hitting drum beats from Dave Grohl, growling guitars, pounding bass lines, and Reznor's snarling vocals with angry lyrics.

From the Still EP is a stripped-down version of Something I Can Never Have with a somber piano and an acoustic guitar as the melancholic song with Reznor's calm vocals is one of the best songs that NIN has ever done. The smooth, vibrant All The Love In The World with its sputtering beats, throbbing bass lines, and Reznor's vocals that are filled with desperate lyrics. No, You Don't is a growling rocker with thrashing guitar riffs, hammering beats, snarling vocals and lyrics, and shimmering synthesizers as it's a fierce track from The Fragile. The cover of Adam Ant's Physical is an intense rocker with growling guitars, sexual-laden lyrics, and hammering beats is one of NIN's fantastic covers. The With Teeth B-side Home that features wailing guitars, hammering drums by Jerome Dillon, and melancholic lyrics from Reznor is one of the more underrated cuts by NIN.

The scratchy, snarling The Big Come Down from The Fragile is one of the most complex NIN has ever played with wailing guitars, hard-hitting drums, and Reznor's angry lyrics with elements of fear in dealing with his own fragility. From Still is The Becoming performed with just a piano, drums, and an acoustic guitar as the stripped-down version of the track is superior to the original studio version from The Downward Spiral in terms of its performance and musicality. The fast, hard-hitting Gave Up from the Broken EP is one of NIN's mainstays with its charging guitars, thrashing drums, and snarling lyrics that stands as one of NIN's best cuts. Reptile, from The Downward Spiral, is another NIN mainstay with its slow, thundering drums, growling guitars, haunting electronic arrangements, and Reznor's dark lyrics as it also recalls moments of desperation. The last track in the original track listing is the fast, frenetic Getting Smaller from With Teeth with its fast-charging beats from Dave Grohl, driving guitar riffs, and Reznor's snarling vocals with incendiary lyrics.

Added from the 2009 official NIN website iPhone application and listen section of the website are five tracks from Year Zero and The Slip. First is the brooding, electronic-driven Me, I'm Not with its throbbing rhythms, swirling electronic arrangements, and Reznor's paranoid-driven lyrics. Vessel with its grinding, fuzzy electronic sounds, droning wails, and slow, grinding rhythms with dark lyrics is another track that's become a recent favorite with NIN fans. In This Twilight is a haunting yet somber ballad with powerful drum beats from Josh Freese and Reznor's melancholic lyrics with a driving chorus that is supported by a fantastic bass line. The growling Head Down featuring Robin Finck's growling guitars, Freese's fast-hitting beats, and Reznor's snarling vocals with lyrics of fear. The last track in the extended version is Demon Seed with its bouncy clap-beats, throbbing bass lines, Reznor's paranoid-driven lyrics, and Finck's growling guitars as it serves as a nice close to the collection.

While the Deep Cuts, like The Singles isn't perfect due to what tracks are left out. It's definitely an excellent starting point for audiences new to NIN that wanted to check outside of their singles. Fans of NIN will see this record as a nice addition to their collection though they will admit it's not perfect. In the end, for anyone interested in NIN's finer moments from their albums. The Definitive NIN-Deep Cuts is the collection to get.
