The Bottom Line Definitive NIN-Heavy Tracks is an Excellent Companion Piece to the Definitive NIN series. (4.5 out of 5)

The fourth part of the Definitive NIN series but not part of any official or unofficial NIN discography. Definitive NIN-Heavy Tracks is a collection of material focusing on Nine Inch Nails' hardest, loudest, and heaviest tracks among its 20 year career. 23 tracks in total that includes instrumental cuts and remixes. It is the opposite side of the Definitive NIN-Quiet Tracks though both collections do delve into the band's experimental material. From the official NIN website iPhone application and the site's listen section, Definitive NIN-Heavy Tracks is an excellent collection material for those who just love to rock.

Opening the collection from the Broken EP is the industrial-metal thrash of Last with its growling, screeching guitar riffs plus hammering beats and droning synthesizers. It's one of NIN's loudest tracks with Trent Reznor's growling vocals and incendiary lyrics as it's a brutal song to attack to. Letting You from The Slip is a thunderous, rocking track with fast tempos, biting lyrics, wailing guitars, and pound bass lines as it is a song that just punches through the skull. You Know What You Are? from With Teeth with Dave Grohl's frenetic drum fills, screeching guitars, Reznor's screaming vocals, and direct lyrics as it's just a blazing song that just goes for it. No, You Don't is a mid-tempo track with growling guitars, Reznor's snarling vocals and lyrics with frenetic keyboard melodies. With its arrangements from a slow verse and then fast instrumental piece and back a slow, mid-tempo presentation. It's one of NIN's beloved cuts.

From Year Zero is the single Survivalism with its droning bass line, bouncy clap-rhythm, and paranoia-driven lyrics features a heavy chorus of fuzzy electronic growls and hard-hitting drums. A remix of March Of The Pigs called All The Pigs, All Lined Up from that single features a more frenetic drum fill, crowd noises, distorted vocals, and warbling synthesizer lines. From Broken is Wish with its windy synthesizer background, growling guitars, hard-hitting drums, and nihilistic lyrics with Reznor's snarling vocals that is essential NIN. Starf*ckers, Inc. from The Fragile is a frenetic, fast-paced industrial rocker with bouncy rhythms, raging guitars, and assaultive lyrics towards Marilyn Manson and the alternative rock scene of the 1990s. Burn from the Natural Born Killers soundtrack starts off as a mid-tempo track with trash-can style beats, droning bass synthesizers, and a raging chorus with loud beats and raging guitars filled with nihilistic lyrics.

1,000,000 from The Slip is an upbeat rocker with growling guitars, bouncy drum fills, pounding bass lines, and snarling lyrics from Reznor as it's NIN raw and uncompromised. Gave Up with its droning bass synthesizer, throbbing rhythms building momentum that leads to a loud track with crashing drums and growling guitars is another NIN staple that rocks out. Vessel from Year Zero with its full-on electronic arrangements of bell sounds, hollow synthesizers, chugging rhythms, and growling sounds is one of the more dense but heavy NIN cuts. The Collector with Dave Grohl's hard-hitting fills, pounding bass lines, snarling guitars, and Reznor's angry vocals is one of the highlights from With Teeth during the song's chorus. Terrible Lie with its throbbing, mid-tempo rhythm and reflective lyrics features spurting guitar growls and loud beats that includes a swooning synthesizer in its chorus.

From the Fixed remix EP is Fist F*ck, a remix of Wish with warbling loops of guitar riffs, pounding drum fills, distorted vocals, and rumbling electronics that play through the entire track as it's one of the most intense NIN remixes of its rich discography. Suck from Broken starts off as a wobbly, mid-tempo track with twangy bass lines and a smooth rhythm with a chorus that is loud and thrashing with its crashing drums and raging guitars. The classic single Head Like A Hole with its raging guitars and fast-paced beats in its chorus that is accompanied by a droning synthesizer in the verse section is one of the definitive NIN classics that fans love to hear live. 8 Ghosts I from Ghosts I-IV is a track with slow but hammering beats, warbling bass lines, and growling guitars that wails through with fuzzy sounds. 31 Ghosts IV from that same record, is a heavy track with swank-growling guitars, bouncy drum fills, and droning bass synthesizer tracks that includes a wailing guitar solo from Adrian Belew.

From Year Zero is Hyperpower! with its cadence-like drumming and growling guitars that gets things moving as it closes down to chaos. Happiness In Slavery with its intense beats, driving bass lines, frenetic synthesizer arrangements, and dark lyrics as it's one of the darkest, heaviest tracks NIN has created. Mr. Self Destruct from The Downward Spiral is one of the most intense tracks with an opening sound of hammering beats and screams that builds momentum. With its distorted, fuzzy electronics, growling guitars by Adrian Belew, and screaming vocals in the chorus. It's one of the most enraging cuts from the band. From The Fragile is Pilgrimage with men screaming the word as a chanting choir with cadence-like drumming, growling guitars, fragmented electronic arrangements, and a wailing trumpet.

Definitive NIN-Heavy Tracks is a well-made compilation from NIN through its website. While they aren't available anywhere, it can be compiled easily by fans though they would have suggestions on what should be in the compilation. For anyone into hard rock and heavy metal will see this as an excellent collection profiling NIN's heavier moments. Though it's not part of NIN's official or unofficial discography, Definitive NIN-Heavy Tracks is an excellent companion piece to the Definitive NIN series.
