Cingular - Just Say No

Written: Jan 20 '02 (Updated Jan 21 '02)
  • User Rating: Disappointing
  • Local Coverage:
  • Plan Flexibility:
  • Customer Service:
Pros:Seemingly broad coverage. Very nice customer service.
Cons:Inaccurate coverage map. No CDMA. Will not work on most networks, so you lose coverage.
The Bottom Line: Don't do it unless you never ever ever leave the city limits. But if you do that, why do you need a wireless phone?

So you are looking for a wireless provider in the South? Who better than BellSouth (now Cingular)? Guess what??? Your best bet is to go with Alltel or Cellular One, sadly.

They really wouldn't be so bad if they JUST used the signal from other companies' towers like Verizon et al. Cingular will stick to their own network or preferred towers, which costs you BIG TIME in signal strength.

For what it's worth, I am in Columbus, GA, and know of several people that have done the Cingular thing and lived to tell about it. Just don't waste your time. Try to get the salessap to go for a ride with you to ANYWHERE 5 miles from the Cingular stores here in town...and ask to use his/her phone. You will quickly see why Cingular is the one to avoid!

PS - Cingular let me out of my contract because of the ZERO coverage that was backed-up by reps from the retail store that is 1.5miles from my house.

Good luck!
