Thought this was a high end store; this particular item wouldn't even be at K-Mart.

Very disappointed in a gift item (wooden Royal Nutcracker Music Box) purchased from the Frontgate online store; unfortunately, couldn't find a way to review it for others on their site (or any other) so here I am on epinions, hoping someone else doesn't buy it and experience the disappointment we did!
Along with this I ordered some hand towels and washclothes on sale because we've gotten the catalogs and everything seems so HIGH end (note: these items are okay but only okay, nothing special darn it). But it was this item I really wanted, as a special gift for our daughter, who loves Nutcrackers AND the Little Drummer Boy song. So an item combining both -- well, I thought it would be a special present she'd cherish for years to come. (Sigh). NOT.
On Frontgate.com, it sounds -- and looks -- beautiful, and for $15.95 (regularly $32.50 -- supposedly) it seemed like a great deal. However, do a close up view on Frontgate.com. No really, zoom in a couple of times. See all that gold around the edges that looks like glitter? Yeah, that's actually glitter, as in the kind you sprinkle on glue. Aaaannd, it appears that's what they did.
But it's not just the cheap glitter trim. I had a sinking feeling when I pulled the little box out of the big box and heard something rattling around. Turns out that was one of the drumsticks, which had come unglued. When I pulled the little guy out and saw that he had glitter glued all around, and that the arms and mouth piece were held at the back with very thin wire so fine and fragile that one was already bent, my heart really sank. This was a piece of junk, pure and simple. I wouldn't give it away. $5 bin at K-Mart? Maybe, if it's marked down ... nope, still wouldn't buy it because you just know all that glitter is going to end up in your carpet, clothes, and furniture.
Still, I did wind the base to hear the music - ugh. Wound it several times and it played for 3 - 5 seconds, very fast. Imagine the cheapest possible windup music box -- tinny, too fast, ridiculous really. That's what you're getting!
The good news is that I called customer service and they refunded me right away - not just the price, but the estimate for this item's shipping too. They didn't bother to ask for it back since it's broken and, well, cheap. So the service gets 5 star but the store overall only 3, because I'm so surprised they'd sell an item like this.
