Stamps.com is Too Little for Too Much
by AliventiAsylum | Jan 21 '02
When I first came across Stamps.com last year, I was thrilled. Recently, the USPS had revamped our local post office. The changes were supposedly for the better, but the result had been very long lines with a minimum of a half hour wait. I ...

Ugh! I'm glad I got out of there when I did. They make going to the post office seem like a good idea!

Thanks for the comment and the information.

Things Have Gotten Worse (Reply to this comment)

Stamps.com has eliminated the $4.65 "personal" price level; the only option now is to pay at the $15.99 level - this was the old "business" price. The advantage is that you don't pay a surchage on any postage you buy, and (like always) it comes with a free scale and other goodies.

The disadvantage is that, since once upon a time I was a customer at the $4.95 level, Stamps.com tells me I am not eligible for any of their promotions. Had I never been a customer of Stamps.com, I'd get a free scale, $25 worth of free postage, and other goodies.

However, since I was once a $4.65 customer--even though *I never got any promotions*--I am ineligible for the promotion at the $15.95 price.

Now, this may not have been quite as bad, but Stamps.com didn't tell me any of this until after I had already given my credit card number, and downloaded & installed the software. I even tried to use my old account name & password when signing up for service: It wouldn't let me. (This is a perennial problem--I've cancelled a couple of times before, and each time I have to create a new user ID).

So Stamps.com isn't clever enough to let me user an old username, or to tell me that I am ineligible for these promotions before I give up my credit card number. But Stamps.com is clever enough to automatically link my old account to my new account and deny me the promotion... even though I have changed addresses and credit card numbers since then. (It must use email address, or maybe it can check to see if the software was installed before).

Suffice to say I won't be keeping the service. I did write to customer service to ask them about the situation. Maybe they'll relent and tell me I'm eligible for the promotion after all. Either way there will be enough material for a new review.

and really considered trying it. I have bad luck with printers...I'm now convinced I'm better off going to the post office.

Thank you for your very helpful account of this site, Good & Bad.

I thought Stamps.com was a pitiful replacement for E-Stamp.com. So I'm back to the old fashioned way. However, I am considering electronic bill payment. Yet in some ways that's pretty restrictive at times, and I usually have more (because of my ebay activity) bills to pay than the minimum for the low fee. Hmmm. Any ideas?
