The Perfect Soundtrack to Your Next Halloween Party
Oct 19 '09
The Bottom Line No Monster Mash. Ever. Never be caught with lame Halloween music again.
My favorite holliday is fast approaching, and people are gearing up to either host or attend a fantastic Halloween party. Increasingly, Halloween is becoming an adult affair, certainly in my circle of friends, we could scarcely contemplate bringing children along for one of our soirees! However, nothing ruins a Halloween party for me faster than another rousing rendition of "Monster Mash" or "Purple People Eater."
Here you will find my recommendations for a top notch, well rounded, flavor of Halloween music, inspired by everything from movies, 80's goth and industrial, 90's grunge, and everything in between. So let's get started.
The New Essentials
1. Ministry - "Everyday is Halloween" It astounds me that Ministry hasn't gotten as much Halloween play as they should. While they became a lot more hardcore, this little number is the perfect opening number. You can also add in Ministry's "Stigmata" but just make sure someone doesn't start a mosh pit in your living room.
2. Marilyn Manson - "This is Halloween" One of the few times I crave to hear Manson is this time of year. This cover is perfect.
3. Michael Jackson - "Thriller" Let's get it out of the way. This will forever be a benchmark to which all other Halloween songs will be compared to. Pass on the full 9 minute plus rendition, though.
4. John Carpenter - "Halloween Theme" An instantly recognizable crowd-pleaser. Team this up later in the mix with Mark Oldfield's "Tubular Bells", better known as the theme from The Exorcist (preferably the version without the silly Halloween sound effects).
5. Danny Elfman - "Beetlejuice Theme" On the lighter side, no one over the age of 25 will complain about this fun one.
6. Bauhaus - "Bella Lugosi's Dead" For this one, the full length version is a must. This is the group that launched a thousand goth bands.
7. Oingo Boingo - "Dead Man's Party" Somewhat forgotten but instantly recognizable.
8. Marilyn Manson - "Antichrist Superstar" The droning of the repetitive chords and melody, and Manson's groaning voice are absolutely perfect for scary Halloween parties.
9. Rob Zombie - "Living Dead Girl" I think it's self explanatory.
10. Iron Maiden - "The Number of the Beast" While you don't want to overwhelm your playlist with metal, this one's probably going to fly with most of your party goers.
11. Rockwell vs. Mysto and Pizzi - "Somebody's Watching Me" Yep, this is the remixed version heard on Geico's infectious advertising campaign.
12. Ray Parker Jr. - "Ghostbusters" (Don Rimini Remix) The original is still a crowd-pleaser, but this is I think a better remix than the more widely known techno one.
Going Further
A lot of these are just aptly named yet still good party music, some are harder core, and some are more silly but still requisite adult Halloween party music in my book.
The Cranberries - "Zombie" Stone Temple Pilots - "Wicked Garden" 45 Graves - "Evil" INXS - "Devil Inside" Rocky Horror Picture Show - "Time Warp" The B-52's - "Devil in My Car" (A perfect slightly lesser known replacement to the overdone "Rock Lobster") Rob Zombie - "The Devil's Rejects" Metallica - "Devil's Dance" Flogging Molly - "Devil's Dance Floor" Rasputina - "Transylvanian Concubine" Evanescence - "Haunted" AC/DC - "Highway to Hell" Alice Cooper - "This House is Haunted" AFI - "Halloween" (Cover of the Misfits... speaking of which, you could probably load the whole discography of The Misfits but my choice would be...) The Misfits - "Mommy, Can I Go Out and Kill" The White Stripes - "Walking With a Ghost"
If you really want to make your guests wonder about you...
Jerry Goldsmith - "Ave Satani" (from "The Omen" soundtrack") Danny Elfman - "Army of Darkness" Buffy, The Vampire Slayer - "Main Theme" Danny Elfman - "Mars Attacks - Main Theme" The Velvet Underground - "The Gift" Skinny Puppy - "Worlock" SKinny Puppy - "Grave Wisdom" Aphex Twin - "Come to Daddy" Frontline Assembly - "Everything Must Perish"
Finally, not really Halloween or scary, but just songs that set a peculiar vibe or mood that might fit your party.
The Faint - "Glass Dance" The Bangles - "Walk Like an Egyptian" (extended full version) Styx - "Mr. Roboto" Fantomas - "Vendetta" Garbage - "Medication" Garbage - "Bleed Like Me" AFI - "Miss Murder" Poe - "Haunted"
So there you have it. Plenty of suggestions to spice up your party mix this Halloween. Did I miss anything? I'm sure you'll comment.
