The 1" filter frames are generally very inexpensive and easy to install with minimal duct modifications. I'd be surprised if it's more than $100.00 but it will repay you tenfold over the life of the furnace.

Thanks for the comment

Thanks for the information! This confirms my suspicion. I will look into replacing the electrostatic filters (which are about 3" deep) with a 1" holder for HEPA filters.

Hi Talyseon,

While I often check my own appliances and don't bother to charge myself, I can appreciate my advice often suggests incurring a cost. However, doesn't it feel good to know that a licensed, trained professional has checked out your home and things are working as they should? You should be able to sleep much easier at night with one less thing that could inflict damages to your health or even your life.

Thanks for the comment, it means alot to me,... really.

Absolutely consider the paper HEPA filter alternative. The aluminum mesh filters were virtually useless against small particles that circulate through the duct system. They only pick up the big stuff and the rest is recycled through your home. Electrostatic filters were more or less a scam and the new HEPA paper filters don't have to cost an arm and a leg. You might want to look at having a 1" filter holder installed. It's like a frame, if the current one is wider. Stores like Lowe's and HD sell replacement filters for as little as three for $12.00 or less and they are infinitely better than what you currently have. You do have to change them about three or four time a year to keep them effective, but it's worth it.

You will see a difference in air quality I guarantee it.

Thanks for your comment and your question.

The Gasman

...your writing inspired me to have all of mine checked, cleaned and serviced this year. It took one day, and the cost was one service call. That's all.

Thanks for the good work you do, and do so well.

Talyseon.

Question for you: you mention HEPA filters; my furnace ("burner" about 3 years old; the rest, about 25 years old) has aluminum mesh filters and electrostatic filters. Should I consider replacing them with paper HEPA filters?
