Day 13 on the Equinox: See Naples and live...

Nov 09 '09

The Bottom Line Alas, no sightseeing in Naples for me because of the weather.

Or something like that. When the Equinox arrived in Naples, Italy this morning, it was pouring down rain. And buckets of it. I mean, it was bound to happen -- we've had twelve really spectacular days of sunny, clear weather, so it was no surprise to me. And it was a cold rain, as I discovered when I ventured out on my veranda to check things out.

I had been planning on exploring Naples a bit on my own, but looking at the leaden skies and no visibility even from Deck 9, it just wasn't worth it. Besides, I wanted to have my packing finished up before dinner, so that all I had to do was slap on the disembarkation tags, and have everything shlepped out for me the next morning.

I went up to the Oceanview and had my breakfast, a very leisurely one as I watched the bustle in the harbour. Despite the rain, it was quite busy with cruise ships -- The Norwegian Jade, a Swan Hellenic, and another Celebrity ship -- and plenty of ferries, and cargo ships of every description. From the starboard side, I could see some of the Naples waterfront, including the bulk of a castle that looked to be in pretty good repair. But the rest of the view was obscured by rain, and knowing that my hip and knee had not been cooperating with me lately, I was torn between knowing that I ought not to be out in the bad weather, and wanting to go anyway.

Sensibility won out, I stayed in. I got all of my baggage sorted out, set out my clothing for the next day to go into my carryon, and made certain that I had not forgotten anything. I felt rather sad that I would be leaving the Equinox the next morning and the people I had met aboard her, but I was also glad to be heading home again. I wanted J and the kitties with me again, and I had found myself wishing that J had been with me on this trip to experience everything. But, alas, he hates to travel.

I spent the rest of the day curled up with a book, sending J a final email, and making certain that there were enough funds in my account to cover everything. Documents were sorted and packed so that I could get to them right away when I got to the airport.

At dinner that night, we all said goodbye to one another, and I heard about everyone's excursion out to Pompeii, and the downpour that left them soaked to the skin. And resorting to trying to get their clothing dry with the rather puny hair dryer in their room. And once again, we were all sniffling into our napkins.

So that was Naples, and I wish I could have seen more of it. I did get a glimpse of Capri, but it was just a large blue-grey lump on the horizon. In any case, I intend to return to Italy someday and see as much as I can. I turned in early that night, little knowing the nightmare that was awaiting me for the next day.
