Alex took the words out of my mouth. I think I have a knack for avoiding Hollywood's worst films (which are the great majority), but I would have to list "300" and "Basic Instinct 2" as my most abysmal views of 2007 (the latter on a plane, therefore I am partly excused).
Thanks for the warning!

An excellent choice of films. (Reply to this comment)

I could never understand the appeal of horror films that are thinly disguised snuff films. And you are right about Eddie Murphy -- he hasn't done anything worth watching in years. Thank you for warning me off these films, I'll be certain to avoid them. -- Telynor

Those Are Some Bad Films... (Reply to this comment)

Dane Cook, I think, is one of the most unfunny comedians out there. I'm not surprised he would do something bad. Why is Eddie Murphy still making movies? Norbit hella-sucked. The last 2 films he made were flops and he's become more and more of a softy with cheesy family films that no one wants to see. He either needs a new agent or go back to standup.
I saw Daddy Day Camp and oh boy. Cuba Gooding Jr. should have his Oscar taken. In fact, he never should've won it in the first place because there were 4 better performances that year that should've won. It could've either gone to Edward Norton for Primal Fear or William H. Macy for Fargo.
The 2 films I would pick for worst of the year are Epic Movie which is just downright, unentertaining and Bordertown starring J-Lo about the Juarez killings. The latter, is this awful thriller that tries to be a bunch of films but fails while J-Lo's attempts to act were very bad. It was booed at the Berlin Film Festival earlier that year and ended up being a straight-to-DVD release.

Thanks for the comments. Hannibal Rising was made because Dino figured he'd make money on it and Harris made it easy by doing the screenplay on his own book for the movie. Harris got greedy and went to the well too many times. Manhunter remains for me the best of the series, Silence was very good but the ending reminded me of Wait Until Dark. Hannibal was the biggest budgeted sleazy grindhouse movie ever made. Red Dragon wasn't as good as Manhunter and shouldn't have been made either.
Borat was a smart movie using stereotypes to comment on the hypocrisy of many people and many institutions existing in the U.S.
I agree that Norbit was a horrendously awful and offensive attempt to make a dumb comedy that allowed Murphy to play multiple roles and show off. It might have left enough of a bad taste in many Academy voters so that several decided NOT to vote for Murphy to get a supporting Oscar for Dreamgirls. We will never know, but it's a possibility.

Where have you gone Eddie Murphy a comedy nation turns its lonely eyes to you? (Reply to this comment)

Chris.
I never actually saw Good Luck Chuck. Personally I would put Norbit at the top. Although it could never actually be proven, I strongly suspect that Norbit may have played a major role in sabotaging Eddie Murphy's Oscar chances for his Dreamgirls role. Norbit was easily the most tasteless offensive movie to come out of that year. I know a few people who ripped on Borat for being the same way. But Borat was actually funny and it was also satirical while Norbit was built on stereotypes and used them as punchlines. Worse, it wasn't even funny. The offensiveness would've been easier to overlook if there had been some real humor. But there wasn't any!
The other two on your list that I saw were Smokin Aces and Hannibal Rising. I liked Smokin Aces at the time. It wasn't anything great. But it was a decent kill a couple hours movie. Not anything to hold up as a classic or watch again and again. But fun. Hannibal Rising on the other hand I hated. I didn't go see it in the theater. I caught it on TV later and turned it off halfway through. Why oh why did they have to make this movie as a sort of pop psychology explanation for why Hannibal Lecter was the way he was? After Red Dragon they should've laid the good Dr to rest.
Great article
