I am a remodeling comtractor in the mid-south. After seeing the angie's list ad on t.v., I decided to go to the site to see how it worked. I discovered that they were offering free trials in my area, and decided to set up an account with bogus information--name, address, phone all off the top of my head--completely bogus. I was then able to log in and post a glowing review about my company--again all of it bogus. I never did the job I was describing. The only factual information was the name and phone number of my company.
I expected that angies list would probably not post the review since it was completely false, and therefore, unverifiable. I laughed to myself when I logged in a few days later to see my A rating right at the top of the list.
Angies list obviously never verified the consumer review and never contacted my company (the only verifiable in formation in the review) about the posting.
I began to feel a little guilty about my deception and called their toll free line. I didn't divulge that I was the one who posted the review, but I did inform them that the job in question was never done by my company. The CS rep from angies list informed me that they could not alter or remove reviews at the request of contractors even if they are possible.
I laughed again as I hung up on the CS rep, and decided to just leave well enough alone. Perhaps, if business slows down, I'll branch out into medicine since I can charge three times what I currently make if angies list will endorse me as a physician.
