The Bottom Line The Coretta Scott Award is presented annually to the previous year's most distinguished African-American author and illustrator. These are links to the books and reviews found in Epinions' database.
The Coretta Scott King Awards are presented by the American Library Association (ALA) each year to honor African-American Authors and illustrators who have created the most outstanding children and young adult books of the preceding year. This was established in 1969 and the awards were initially given to authors but in 1979 this was expanded to include a separate award for illustrators. The awards to illustrators have not occurred every year and where not awarded this has been noted. These awards are given to honor both Mrs. Coretta Scott King, for her continuing efforts toward peace and civil rights, and to commemorate the lifetime work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The following is a list of the winners of the Coretta Scott King Author and Illustrator Awards; this does not include the honor books. There are quite a few books toward the end of the list that are not in the database. Where possible, links to the authors and illustrators and their works found in the Epinions database are provided. Many of these appear in the lists of honors. Epinions offers a category that designates Awards and Honors in books-this also includes the Coretta Scott King Awards but that list is not current and it is not in chronological order. Please consider reading and reviewing the following books. These are not limited to fiction only, many of the books in this list are non-fiction. This list and other children's books award list are pinned in the Children's section of the Books Message Boards. 2012 Heart and Soul: The Story of America and African Americans, written by Kadir Nelson 2011 One Crazy Summer, written by Rita Williams-Garcia 2010 Bad New for Outlaws The Remarkable Life of Bass Reeves Deputy U.S. Marshal, written by Vaunda Micheaux Nelson (no reviews). 2009 We Are the Ship: The Story of Negro Baseball written and illustrated by Kadir Nelson (no reviews) Illustrator No awards given in 2009 2008 Elijah of Buxton by Christopher Paul Curtis Illustrator No awards given in 2008 2007 Copper Sun by Sharon M.
