The Bottom Line Can Arly get a grip on her new powers without anyone seeing her?
Abby would be fine. I had to tell myself that for now. Her infatuation with Edward is something I see in the majority of girls at our school, and a lot of the guys are obsessed with him too for that matter. It doesn’t seem to concern any of them that he’s a petty thief who’s always in trouble with school and the law for truancy, drugs, etc. None of that matters when you’re all dark and mysterious, apparently. Not that I’m perfect or anything. Hell, everyone’s got their flaws. I just try not to let mine get in the way of everyday life. What I do know is that Edward Stephen Whitlock is not worth the time or energy people continually seem to give him. All I could really hope for was that Abby would one day see it as well. I certainly had better things to do than think about that loser. Which brings me back to Naturia. Despite how little I know about The Zews and The Quires, I knew Freznul was right about one thing. If I had any hope of defeating my new enemies, I had to know my powers by the time that first battle came around. To go into that would be like handing The Quires Earth’s only line of defence on a silver platter. I grabbed the headset, and headed for an old landfill on the outskirts of town, which I knew would be abandoned this time of day. If I was going to end up damaging anything, better to do it there than anywhere else. I snuck in through a rusty old fence, and transformed. It didn’t feel as strange this time, and I could only imagine it would just keep feeling more and more natural with time. Freznul said my powers were telepathic. So… what did that mean? I tried clearing my mind and simply focusing on one. “Fire.” My hands began to glow. So that was the intense heat I felt last time. As I kept thinking Fire, that’s exactly what began to shoot from my hands. If I kept focusing on it, I got long, continuous bursts of flames, if I stopped and started, I got fireballs. Very cool. The only problem was that I ended up setting fire to a large pile of rubbish. “Water. I need water.” Unfortunately, this did not shoot from my hands. Instead, I suddenly became very aware of two large water canisters on the other side of the landfill, ready for my command. “Come.” And come they did. Water burst out of them and flew through the air towards me, then hovered streams just at my eye level, as if waiting for my command. Thinking about where I wanted it, that was exactly where it went. Well that was fire and water. But it was time to get out of there, fast. Sure, this place was abandoned this time of night, but if anyone saw that steam, they were going to come asking questions, and I couldn’t be here when they did. As it was, I could be in danger of that anyway, depending where and how far the wind carried the steam. Wind. That stopped me in my tracks. I controlled the wind, not that I’d tried yet, but could I intensify it? Focusing all my energy on the wind and the air currents around me, I started to lift into the air. I was being carried along by the wind, giving me the appearance of flight! By keeping myself purely focused, I zoomed through the air, and was home before I really knew how I’d done it. Praying I hadn’t been seen, I went in through my bedroom window, and took off my helmet. I reflected briefly on what had happened to me. Thankfully, I’m a quick learner, so I was confident I now hand a good handle on air, water, and fire. I could create my own fire, and probably manipulate existing ones too, but I had to be around water to use it. As for air giving me the ability to fly, I had a feeling that was going to come in extremely handy. I would have to wait until the next day to experiment with earth. But before I got a chance, the next day brought another surprise. “Arly, are you home?” “Kayden. This is unexpected.” “Yeah, sorry to just pop around, and I probably should have come sooner, but I wanted to give you a couple of days rest before seeing how you were. Figured you’d have a few people just dropping on once you came out of hospital.” “Well, you don’t have to worry about me. To be honest, I’ve never felt better in my life.” “It doesn’t concern you that the doctors have no idea what happened to you?” “I really wish people would listen to me on this. I know exactly what happened. I fainted, and went into a deep sleep. Probably my body’s way of telling me I’ve been taking on too much, between school and helping Mum out.” “Arly, there’s one part of that I sincerely believe, and the rest is hogwash. I’ll tell you the latter first - you don’t over-exert yourself any more than the average teenage girl. Between my older sisters, and all my peers through high school and now Uni, I’ve seen a fair bit of the average teenage girl. And they don’t just go into a near coma because they’re a bit tired. The vast majority balance school and a part-time job without any trouble at all. “But here’s the part I do believe. You know exactly what happened to you that night, and for some reason, you won’t tell anyone.” “Well you know what Kayden, there’s something I don’t understand. And that’s why this is really of any concern to you. Even if I did know what happened to me that night, don’t you think I’d tell Abby, or one of my friends first? My mother’s employee would be a fair way down the list. That’s if there even was a secret.” Kayden stared at me, an expression of pure determination on his face. “Arly, there is a secret. That much I know. It’s the only thing that makes sense out of any of this. But here’s why I want to know - I want to know everything. I got into IT so I could learn how to solve some of the most complex mysteries in this world. What happened to you that night is the biggest mystery I’ve come across, and I can’t quit until I find the answer. It’s not in my nature. “But here’s the kicker. I want to know because I care about you. I know I’m kind of on the outside because I don’t go to school with you and Abby or anything, but we’ve worked together often enough I thought we were still friends. And I’m worried about you, the same way I’d be worried about any of my other friends if this happened to them.” I was stunned. “I don’t know what to tell you.” “The truth would be a good start, but it doesn’t look like I’m going to get that today. Arly, I’m not disappointed with that. I know it’s going to take a while for you to trust me the way you trust your other friends. But you can, you know. Trust me, that is.” “Thanks Kayden, I appreciate the sentiment. But I don’t remember a lot about that night, and if and when I do, chances are I’ll have a few things to figure out before I go telling people.” “I can understand that. OK then Arly, I’ll leave you in peace. Guess I’ll see you at work in a few days.” Well that was a conversation I never expected to have. Kayden did get me thinking though, there was someone who deserved to know. Somehow, I had to find a way to tell Abby. I just didn’t know when I was going to do it, or what to say. How much was she going to believe? --------- “Boss, we’ve been keeping an eye on the new power source and the surrounding areas down on Earth. As you’d expect, none of the humans have a clue what they’re sitting on, and even if they did dig it up, they wouldn’t know what it was or what it can do.” “Should be a fairly swift takeover then. We get in, get what we came for and get out. Then we can take our revenge on those deceitful Zews, and send them back to The Galactic Dungeons where they belong.” “Unfortunately sir, it won’t be that easy. It appears one of The Zews has beaten us there. Naturia has been spotted.” “Naturia! That’s impossible. She was defeated a long time ago. Are you telling me she survived?” “No, sir, the original carrier is indeed long dead, but her powers have apparently been passed on.” “To a Zew? The powers of Naturia can only be wielded by one who is pure of heart, and we know for a fact none of them can possibly qualify.” “Sir, we are still researching this strange occurrence, but our current belief is that one of The Zews has passed the powers onto a human. If we are correct, it means those powers are now even stronger, given the structure of Earth’s ecosystem. If this human manages to completely harness Naturia’s powers and heighten them to their full potential, we may not stand a chance against her.” “Then there is only one thing we can do. Do we have any scouts in the nearby vicinity?” “Yes, one of our scout ships is positioned above Earth as we speak, awaiting orders.” “Send him in. His mission: to find the true identity of Naturia, and destroy her in her human form.” |
