The Bottom Line Another glorious tale from a misspent youth
Summer of '88, I'm walking down the beach with some dudes from Church in Panama City away on a youth retreat. We're doing our usual BS'n when we happen upon an unusual sand castle. Okay, it wasn't a castle at all, just a crude rendering of a naked girl built out of sand. And perhaps I should have capitalized built, as she would make a fertility goddess jealous. "Check it out dudes, it's the Kristy Jett memorial!" I said as I pointed at the sand sculpture, knowing full well she's a few yards ahead and within earshot. "That's not funny Tim" she huffed, but the guys around disagree, naturally. We laugh and carry on with more BS'n. Occasionally we'll pass someone from our group heading back to the hotel and we'll tell them to check out the "Memorial". We pass it on the way back & laugh all over again. I forget about it until April Stephens mentions it back at the hotel. "I heard y'all built a Kristy Jett memorial in the sand." "Uhhh, no, I can only take credit for naming it. Some other guys did the handywork." "Are you gonna' have your babes build a Tim Swift memorial?" "They can't. Not enough sand." |
