Dragonfire's Picks for the Best Movies of 2009Feb 27 '10 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line These are my picks for the best movies of 2009. I was able to see several movies over the course of 2009. For most of the movies, I ended up enjoying them though I did sit through some I didn't care for. There are still several movies that came out in 2009 that I haven't been able to see yet that I still want to see at some point. This list is made up of what I think are the best movies released in 2009. My list is based on the movies from 2009 that I have seen so far. As I watch some of the other movies released in 2009 that I want to see, I'll add them to this list if I feel they should have a spot on it. The movies in my list aren't in any particular order. Like has happened before, my list already has more than ten movies. Public Enemies - This movie is focused on a few years in the life of bank robber John Dillinger. Some of the other criminals from the same time as well as things connected to the FBI are included as well. The movie manages to be very entertaining even though there are some slower scenes. Johnny Depp gives an amazing performance as Dillinger. Watchmen - The graphic novel Watchmen has been called groundbreaking. It has also been said that it could never be done as a movie. The movie works as a very entertaining movie that is nothing like any of the other superhero movies I've seen. The movie is full of violence and even male frontal nudity, so it isn't something for everyone. I finally read the graphic novel and the movie stays very faithful to it. State of Play - This entertaining thriller works much better than most other recent thriller type movies I've seen. It is based on a six part British drama that aired in 2003. The movie tells the story of a reporter working on a story that ultimately has connections to a politician in a sex scandal. The somewhat slower pace works for the movie and helps to build tension. The movie is very entertaining and has a strong cast. The Proposal - This highly entertaining movie is about a career driven woman facing deportation and her plan to stay in the country by saying she is marrying her assistant. The plot isn't the most original and several things are predictable, but it still manages to be very entertaining. I don't think of the movie as a romantic comedy because there really isn't a lot of romance in it. Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds are wonderful in their parts, and Betty White is hilarious in her small part. Seeing Reynolds almost naked doesn't hurt either. The Hangover - This movie is very funny, but it also has the potential to offend a lot of people. The plot, dealing with a group of friends going to Vegas for a bachelor party, seems simple at first, but things get more complicated when the groom goes missing. The remaining friends try to piece back together what happened in the night before and discover several surprising things. I think the humor works to make this one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. Avatar - James Cameron's first movie since Titanic tells the story of a former marine involved in things on Pandora, a moon in another star system. The plot is a bit weak considering how long the movie is and it isn't the most original, but it is still a very entertaining movie worth seeing. The visuals are absolutely amazing and help to make what is going on more interesting. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - This adaptation of the sixth book in the popular Harry Potter series has issues and is my least favorite of the movies, but it is still entertaining overall. The darker tone works well to help set up what Harry and his friends will be facing, though certain things are not set up properly. The cast, especially Alan Rickman, is wonderful. Julie & Julia - This delightful movie tells the story of two women, Julie Powell and Julia Child. Julie decides that she is going to prepare every recipe in Julia's cookbook over the course of a year and blog about her attempts. Some of her attempts are humorous, but the movie really shines when it is focused on Julia. The time she spent living in Paris with her husband is covered, and that is when she discovered her love of cooking and started working on the cook book. The parts of the movie focused on Julie don't work as well, though the movie is very entertaining overall. Meryl Streep is absolutely amazing as Julia. Sherlock Holmes - The popular detective is back in a new movie. He and Watson have been working together for a while. They are dealing with a case that has ties to the supernatural. The story is handled very well and makes the odd things work. Clues are very subtle, and several times their significance isn't explained until later. The look of London is wonderful, helping to make things more believable. The movie is very entertaining with Robert Downey Jr. giving an amazing performance. The Blind Side - This movie tells the true story of football player Michael Oher and how his life changed after meeting the Tuohy family. Michael has a very hard life that he turns around after becoming part of the Tuohy family. With their help and support, he starts doing better in school, becomes a star football player and eventually becomes a player for the NFL. The movie has a few slower spots, but it works very well as an entertaining movie. Sandra Bullock does an amazing job as Leigh Anne Tuohy. Star Trek - Instead of being a prequel, this movie basically reboots the Star Trek series and creates an alternate timeline which will allow the well known characters to have new adventures. It is really interesting to see younger versions of the characters, especially how Kirk and Spock don't get along at first. The movie gives an updated look to things while also keeping a consistency with the original series and movies. Up - Pixar continues their streak of amazing animated movies with Up, a movie about a somewhat grumpy older man and the trip he goes on. The first few minutes of the movie share highlights from the life of Ellie and Carl and are some of the most emotionally moving moments I've seen in a movie. Facing his world changing, Carl decides to finally travel to South America using a unique mode of transportation. He has to deal with some unexpected companions and danger. This is the first movie that Pixar has made in 3D and it works perfectly for the story without distracting from what is going on. This movie has more heart and emotion than most live action movies. It is not just the best animated movie of the year, but one of the best movies of the year overall. I'm going to briefly mention a few other movies that came out in 2009 that I think were really good. There were several well done animated movies released in 2009. Coraline is a bit twisted and creepy, but very well done and worth seeing. Monsters vs. Aliens is a fun, animated movie that has a plot that reminds me of the older science fiction movies. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is the third movie in the series that continues the story of the friends and Scrat's attempt at getting his precious acorn. Disney's A Christmas Carol is a new animated version of the classic holiday story that makes very good use of 3D. Angels & Demons is the very entertaining followup to The Da Vinci Code. The movie follows the book fairly close and it works well as a decent thriller. Zombieland is a zombie movie that manages to blend humor and horror elements in a way that works very well to create an entertaining movie. Whip It tells the story of a girl who decides to become a roller derby skater in a very entertaining movie.
