I have used Expedia.com for virtually every hotel reservation I've ever made for vacations as well as weekend getaways. They offer booking information for flights, car rentals, hotels, vacation packages, cruises, business trips, deals, and maps for travel. I've tried two other hotel finders on the internet...Orbitz and Travelocity...and found no problem with them, but they don't offer you the most up to date information available on the hotel.
For instance...
I was recently looking for Hotels in Virginia Beach to stay in September. I opened a search on all three (Expedia, Orbitz, & Travelocity) in order to compare prices and other information available on each site. All three had the same prices as well as the exact same rooms. I found the perfect hotel and chose to book it thru Travelocity because they had a few more pictures available as well as a bit more information on the hotel as well as the area it was located. I went thru the whole booking process only to be told that the room was not available. I was ticked. I then went back to Expedia and checked the exact same hotel for the available room. I went thru the booking process, and voila...there it was. The room is now booked and I have a confirmation email with confirmation number from the hotel. When reserving the hotel, they give the option of reserving it without a deposit or with a deposit. Each hotel has different deposit requirements which are explained to you in the booking information. For example, one hotel gives you up to 14 days before your stay to pay a one night deposit. Another one requires you to pay a one night deposit within five days of booking.
If you choose to join Expedia.com, free of charge, they also offer a link called My Trips. Here you will find all trips you recently booked. Here you have the option of planning a new trip, checking on your reservation, canceling your reservation, adding a map and driving directions, emailing your itinerary, or adding a flight or car rental to your itinerary.
I've had no problems with the bookings. They are always in the hotel computers and I always get what I asked for.
I would say that the biggest problem I've found is that the driving directions aren't always accurate. Once I was driving to Virginia Beach and the directions distinctly told me to get off on an exit going north instead of continuing South, although they said I would still be on the same highway. I looked at the atlas I purchased and confirmed that that would have gotten me completely lost. I would recommend getting your directions thru another provider or at least comparing the directions from Expedia with Orbitz or Travelocity or another provider before using Expedia's.
