The Bottom Line This write-off will prove to be more powerful than a locomotive that can leap tall buildings in a single bound.
2010 begins with monumental news for both Marvel and DC Comics after having come off banner years. On December 31, 2009, The Walt Disney Company acquired Marvel Entertainment for $4.24 billion. That's right. Mickey Mouse and Spider-Man now co-exist with one another. Perhaps now we can finally see that team-up of Super Goof and Darkwing Duck with Iron Man and Wolverine. The success of Iron Man starring Robert Downey, Jr begins the rebirth of the Marvel movie franchise. Marvel is now in control of its own product and intends to create a successful movie path as it has done in the comic books... by creating one cohesive playground where all its characters come to play together. Hints were seen in Iron Man when Nick Fury made a cameo appearance. And after The Incredible Hulk movie starring Ed Norton, a dashing Tony Stark (Robert Downey) makes a very small but vital cameo appearance. This leads to the future of the Marvel's power play in the movie industry with Captain America, Thor and the Avengers getting the spotlight. Not to be outdone, DC Comics, under its parent company Warner Bros., produced one of the highest grossing movie ever with the release of The Dark Knight starring Christian Bale and Heath Ledger. The success of the revitalized Batman franchise has made Warner Bros reposition its thinking and has suspended future DC Comics movies in order to align things in proper order. The creation of DC Entertainment allows for tighter continuity in its movie dealings and creates a shared universe between properties. So it's not surprising to hear that another Batman and Superman movie are in the works, along with Green Lantern and Flash. DC Comics is also celebrating its 75th year in publication in 2010. It began publishing in 1935 with New Fun Comics #1 and continues to entertain the masses to this very day. Comic book milestones will also be reached this year with Superman #700, Batman #700 and Wonder Woman #600. The longevity of these characters is a testament to the creators who have cared for them throughout the years. The debut of the iPad is going to revolutionize comic books in a big way, though it won't be felt right away. Many assume that this new digital technology spells the doom for comic book shops and the printed material. This is far from the truth. In fact digital comic books will only enhance the awareness that these funny pages are still created to this day. While it is true that comic books cost a lot more than they do when I was a kid (I still remember picking them up for only 35¢ an issue; they cost on average $2.99 an issue these days). It means more and more people have to be choosy in terms of what comic books they can actually afford to purchase. Now they can do both-pick up their favourites for their collections and purchase the ones they want to try out online. The first Saturday in the month of May has become a growing tradition in the comic book industry. On May 1, 2010, the comic book industry will once again celebrate Free Comic Book Day for the ninth year. This annual promotion, which started back in 2002, is designed by the North American comic book industry to help bring in new readers into comic book stores. This is also done in conjunction with the release of Iron Man 2 on May 7. The purpose of this event is threefold: first, to introduce new readers to the medium; second; calling back former comic book readers; and last, to thank the current comic book buyers for their support. Major publishers produce a special edition to give away as a promotion for both the company and the characters that they publish as they try to attract new readers into the fold. There are an array of comic books available, ranging from superheroes from DC and Marvel, to traditional ones like Archie and Disney, and even Manga and other independent publishers. Some noted titles available this year are: • War of the Superman #0 and DC Kids Mega-Sampler from DC Comics • Iron Man/Thor and Iron Man: Supernova from Marvel Comics • G.I. Joe #155 ½ from IDW Publishing • Archie's Summer Splash #1 from Archie Comics • Green Hornet #1 from Dynamite Entertainment • Shrek & The Penguins of Madagascar from Ape Entertainment • Toy Story and Irredeemable #1 from BOOM! Studios • Doctor Solar/Magnus from Dark Horse Comics and so much more. For those HeroClix fans, be sure to get the exclusive Free Comic Book Day figure with the release of War Machine, who is slated to be a major part of the Iron Man 2 movie. This figure will be part of the Marvel HeroClix: Armor Wars series coming with a new dial and character card from WizKids/NECA. So what does this have to do with anything at all? In celebration of all the festivities surrounding this popular genre, the third annual Funny Pages Write-Off begins again. Write a review related to comic books and comic strips. Notice I say comic books and not just super-heroes. It can be about comic books (duh), movies, toys, clothes, television shows, cartoons, novels, video games, and anything else you can think of. Did you ride the Superman roller coaster at Six Flags? That totally counts for this. Did you visit Metropolis, Illinois, the "Hometown of Superman?" That counts as well. Anything related to comic books counts. Even better, find obscure references that mention anything about comic books. For example: The movie Office Space implements a quick-rich scheme based on the machinations that happened in Superman III. This will be the summer's blockbuster write-off so have fun from now until the end of July. Give me a shout in the comments section if you do participate. I'll list and link your review(s) to this page. I'm catching up to DC Comics. Just 72 more write-offs before I reach my 75th anniversary.
