The Bottom Line The Veterans of our country are the forgotten patriots.  May we always remember their devotion to our nation by the blank check they signed hears ago to protect our freedom.

Last night I saw a glimpse of American patriotism that I thought was long dead.  I watched my husband, a former marine and current deputy sheriff, put his hand over his heart and solemnly say the pledge of allegiance facing our nation’s flag.

I saw the devotion in his steel green eyes as he proudly sang our country’s national anthem, his eyes never leaving that flag.
It brought tears to my eyes.

Years ago, my husband signed a blank check to give his life for our country.  When he signed that blank check he was just out of high school, not even received his diploma yet.  He had his entire life ahead of him, but was willing to lay it down to defend this country and give his life for it.

Years later after returning home from the service, he signed another blank check to give his life to defend the citizens of our county on local soil as a deputy sheriff.

Every day I send my husband off to work, not knowing if he will return safely home to me.  It is a life that most women could not bear to live, but I know deep in my heart that my husband is devoted unconditionally to serving the citizens of this nation even to laying down his life to save another person – a stranger in need.

And when I read about individuals belittling our soldiers, and the law enforcement community, I wish to goodness that they could have seen my husband as he swore his allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and his continuing allegiance to the citizens of the county to defend and protect them – then they my realize that freedom truly is not free but is a gift that he and other men have given this country by the sweat of their brow, and the blood in their veins.

So, when you read about a soldier losing his life on home soil or over seas, and you read about a law enforcement officer losing his life in the line of duty, please remember this picture – a man with his hand over his heart totally devoted to preserve and protect the life that we have now even to the point of laying his life down – for you.
