The Bottom Line Movies that celebrate what the Japanese are naturally talented at. Displaying the magnificent violence of action!

There are two many Japanese Anime’s to just have a top 10 so this is part 2 of the masterpieces that where left out. From number 10 to 20. All these films I proudly own and like part 1 these films have high action entertainment value.

Kaze no tani no Naushika aka NAAUSICA VALLEY OF THE WIND (1984)
I enjoyed this Miyazaki film the most out of all his magical direction. Wildlife is something I am extremely interested in. This film has a unique style of insect animals that truly creates a wonderful environment awareness film on pars with Princess Mononuke (1997). At its heart is a strong freedom fighting tree hugger story in an apocalyptic future. Very good action and sometimes extremely brutal for a family adventure film, which is typical for anime, they accept violence in films to children at an early stage.

Yôjû toshi aka WICKED CITY (1987)
This film is extremely cheesy in dubbed English so I recommend watching in original Japanese with subtitles. High octane vicious action mixed in with sexual violence. Impressive animated monsters reaching the ultimate goal of sex to accomplish a peace treaty. Unusual to the extent that I originally didn’t like it at first. It seemed like a cheap sex thrill anime but only recently I respect the attention to action and animation it does sooo well, putting many modern day animation to shame.

Kôkaku kidôtai aka GHOST IN A SHELL (1995)
I saw this and Akira (1988) on the same day I originally thought Akira was the better film but Ghost In The Shell should have entertained me more. It had more fighting action and gun play but Akira somehow seemed to interest me more as revolutionary film. I like the amazing music a full orchestra soundtrack. My best scenes that complement the soundtrack and the animation respectively are the opera vocals in the beginning when our lead wakes up and the minimalist ‘cityscape’ scene in the rain.

Mononoke-hime aka PRINCESS MONONUKE (1997)
Another Miyazaki direction has equal violence, nature protection and unusually odd animals as Naausica Valley of the Wind (1984). It is good in both the subbed and dubbed versions. A scene that I seem to remember the most is Ashiitaka in the archery scene, gory in the decapitation of the severed head by arrows whilst galloping on a horse. Comfortably disturbing for a family film. Also has reoccurring young females as the main lead as used in nearly all his films.

SPRIGGAN (1998)
If you’re not into action films I think you might cringe at the sight of this film. It’s like a ‘poor mans’ Akira (1988) it has similarities as in a powerful child genius with ideas on ruling the world by destroying it first and recreating nature. The plot sounds amazing about the discovery of Noah’s ark and even the names given to the super villains named after the atomic bombs that hit Hiroshima and Nagasaki; Little Boy and Fat Man- but the delivery of the epic plot was way too weak. It is cheesy in the dubbed version I recommend watching it in Japanese with subs. This is all about action what Japanese anime is flawless at.

R.O.D. (READ OR DIE) OVA (2001). Short film. A scruffy cute book worm that can manipulate paper at will and femme fatale that materialise through objects are linked together as special agents of the British Library that find and protect rare books. They uncover an evil plot resurrecting super-power clones of historical figures. A plan to clone Ludwig Van Beethoven’s supposedly lost "Death Symphony," which causes anyone who hears it to commit suicide is unearthed. Nice plot, super characters, comical personality clashes between the main heroines, and stylistic, super, crazy, magical, cool battles in a nice short movie.

MIND GAME (2004)
I was going to do a ‘top 10 films trapped inside a whales stomach’ but couldn’t think of 10, only 3. Mind Game (2004), Pinocchio (1940) and Finding Nemo (2003).I’m sure there has to be more can you think of any? The style in which the characters are drawn and even the distortion and surrealism of the action gives this film a cult Anime stamp. The plot is equally as loopy it reminds me of Cat Soup (2001) and the series Kemonuzume (2006), similar in style and equally as entertaining.

Arashi no yoru ni: ONE STORMY NIGHT (2005)
The content of this film might make a child go vegetarian. But I do agree with the wolf- the lamb looked so delicious, but could you eat your best friend. The usual anime violence to show blood and even a fierce wolf fight but still manages to cling on to the family movie appeal. I kinda’ wish they made the lamb a female because at points it seemed like a jolly homosexual relationship. The wolf’s choice of colouring for its fur and its sniggering but polite manner was perfectly done with blushing watercolour effects. The only thing I was sceptical about is the 3D animation used to create the streaming water in the meeting at the river, it seemed to clash with the look and feel of the rest of the film. Still manages to create a warm cuddly atmosphere that teaches children good morals and puts most Disney animation to shame for creating a novel plot.

STREET FIGHTER ALPHA GENERATIONS (2005)
The first animated film Street Fighter 2 The Animated Movie (1994) dubbed version was such a well done action fest that the follow up the appalling Street Fighter Alpha aka Street Fighter Zero (1999) failed miserably at grasping any lime light the original emulated. But they followed that up with a third movie; Street Fighter Alpha Generations which gave one of the coolest characters Akuma, aka Gouki, his well deserved bad @$$ centre spot. It also used the distorted animated style that was slowly becoming more popular after Kid’s Story in the Animatrix (2003). Watch out for Sakura’s high kicks….panty shot alert!!

Sutorenjia: Mukô hadan aka SWORD OF THE STRANGER (2007)
I thought the anime industry worn out the use of blonde haired characters in lead roles but this is no exception with the ‘bad guy’ being a blonde. The plot however is disappointing could have been developed further if it wasn’t for the dynamic action this would have failed as an Edo period film. It has a shimmer of light that feudal Japan samurai film Jûbei ninpûchô aka Ninja Scroll (1993) possessed. Altogether Sword of the Stanger was really impressive, professional soundtrack and splendid sword battles. I haven’t seen sword play animated that well since Samurai chanpurû aka Samurai Champloo (2004).
