First off, let me say that you shouldn't buy this game for a Playstation 2 unless you plan on buying (or already own) a memory card for the older Playstation system. You cannot save your Gran Turismo games on the Playstation 2 memory cards.
Gran Turismo is the epitome of all racing games. The only better is Gran Turismo 2, and the only thing better than GT2 is Gran Turismo 3. See the pattern here?
In the game, you start out by purchasing a low-level auto and competing in some races. You win money based on your placement in the final races, and can use that money to upgrade your car or purchase another car. There are dozens of cars available from every major auto maker, and plenty of options to keep this game quite diverse.
Earning enough money to make big upgrades can take some time, as Gran Turismo gets off to a kind of slow start. This is most likely because it gives you time to get used to the game mechanics and handling.
The graphics for this game, by Playstation standards, are excellent. The soundtrack features actual known recording artists (such as Garbage) and the sound effects are not too bad.
Control is straight forward and pretty realistic, although you can ram the other cars without damage. What I really love about this game is that you don't randomly go into 360 degree spins like you do in some racing games when you turn just a little too sharply.
You can find this one on Ebay for roughly 10 bucks. I would recommend you go ahead and get Gran Turismo 2, as it can be purchased for around $20. If you have a Playstation 2, Gran Turismo 3 is well worth the price.
