How to Choose Socks by Weather Conditions, Temperature, Seasons (etc.) Like a PRO

Background Info

When I have worn one hundred percent to sixty-five percent cotton socks my feet simply do not stay dry enough (anytime of the year regardless if cold or hot or in between the two extremes) to be worth while wearing much more than two to four hours until they simply get too damp and usually even if I powder my cotton socks and inside the shoes my feet get rather damp and the moisture feels rather unpleasant. However there is some cotton socks that can be worn and not have this dreaded aftermath because of being made with some Wool or some Man Made Fibers that wick away moisture well enough to where my feet feel ever so lightly moist (at a tolerable level).

(A disclaimer some people do fine with cotton and others do fine with merino wool and/or manmade fibers such as nylon and more advanced fibers such as CoolMax.)

Generally cotton socks are the worst type of sock you can buy as they are not very durable when doing demanding work such as construction or other means of physical labor or exercising hard. And all of these have the common factor of wear and tear on the heel and/or ankle area along with the toes area that can go thread bare in as little of eight hours to ten hours of torment as I experienced with steel toe shoes and running shoes.

Merino Wool is an excellent material as it helps feet stay warm even while moist, damp, or wet.

Cold (Sixty-four Degrees F on Down to Below Freezing) Winter/Spring

Typically you will desire the warmth of a heavy weight merino wool sock for these conditions unless you are familiar with cold weather and live in the mountains possibly as well in live in the northern states of America or Canada. You may want to wear a sock liner to help aid in the moisture wicking and the retention of body heat. For the most part my favorite sock liner contains Thermolite or Thermax, which these are synthetic hollow core fibers that wick away moisture very well and keep my feet nice and toasty warm in this category of weather. Another good choice is to have a Merino Wool Sock that has Thermolite or Thermax already in it and there should be no need for a sock liner unless you are cold natured or if it is at freezing or below freezing (as everybody is not exactly the same when dealing with cold temps). Sometimes I wear these during the early Spring time here in the Panhandle of Florida as sometimes it gets quite cold (around freezing) and (neat trivia fact) every ten years or so snow will actually stick during this time frame. Cabela's and Rei are good place to search for these types of socks and sock liners. Wool with Thermolite or Thermax, ensures your feet will stay warm and dry. If you get them wet do not fret as your feet will stay relatively warm and get back to previous warmth levels once they dry out.

Chilly and / or Cool (Seventy-eight Down to Sixty-four degrees F) Spring/Fall

Typically Medium Weight Merino Wool Socks will be enough unless there is a severe wind chill factor of fifteen miles per hour or more. When the wind is fast then you should wear Heavy Weight Merino Wool Socks or wear Medium Weight Merino Wool Socks with Thermolite Sox Liner or Thermax Sock Liner to prevent feet from feeling rather cold to feeling like freezing cold. Cabela's and Rei both are excellent source for these types of socks. And as previously stated wool socks are good for keeping feet warm while wet down to ever so slightest amount of moisture on your feet. Also will prevent blisters from happening when wearing the proper shoe size.

Warm to Hot (seventy-eight to above one hundred Degrees F) Spring/Summer

Typically in this weather you will want to wear Light Weight Merino Wool or some sort of CoolMax sock that will help keep your feet from becoming very sweaty and stinky and / or possibly funky as well. SmartWool, Cabela's, and Rei all make some very good Light Weight Merino Wool Socks. Cabela's and Rei both make some excellent CoolMax Socks. Both of these types of socks will evaporate moisture away from the skin best when used with a nylon mesh athletic shoe. Another fine sock manufacturer is WrightSock which make some excellent socks for warm and hot weather that have an inner layer and an outer layer to help prevent getting blisters and/or raw skin from friction.
