Pros:BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE with PS1 games. DVD player. Operates like a pimp.
Cons:Starski and Hutch never made it to DVD. It's EXPENSIVE.
The Bottom Line: Look- it is as common as cancer and catching on just as quick. That is why I recommend it. The only reason.

The Sony Playstation 2 has proven to be a good peice of gear. It starts up at an acceptable speed and can render detailed graphics and sound. If you are a PS1 owner looking to upgrade you will be pleasantly suprised by the smoothness of operation that ps2 brings to the table. On a side note- you will be able to use those old ps1 controllers, too (but it hardly makes up for the extra money I spent in the first place).

The games, although expensive, are highly entertaining and colorful so far. They do tend to be rehashes of PS1 games sometimes so you need to watch out and possibly rent before you buy- a bad choice is a costly mistake with this system. What I mean by that is MANY PS2 GAMES SUCK CRUSTY MONKEY BUTTS. Some of the PS2 games are actually cool, BUT THEN THEY ONLY LAST 15 FRIGGIN MINUTES AND THEY EXPECT YOU TO PAY %% DOLLARS FOR IT ANYWAY... I mean, SHEEESH! Hay-Soos
we are sorry about droppin the big one in the big one. I never thought I would regret our bravery in the Island Hopping Campaigns untill now... I surrender! Make the horror stop!

The console is ungodly expensive. But considering what it will be soon in regards to going online and handling external mods it may prove to be worth the extra capital invested in the near future. OH did I say NEAR future? Try Like YOU AND BUCK ROGERS CAN USE THOSE EXTERNAL MODS TOGETHER BECAUSE THEY AINT NEVER NEVER COMING OUT, BABY. It's never coming out much like Mr Rogers.

The memory cards are 8 MB and the ps2 writes faster to the memory card than on it's predecessor. It has USB ports and if you have compatible hardware it can be used with this system and interface flawlessly (see the Mister Rogers comment above)- and USB is a standard so 3rd party support is almost guaranteed in that respect. (or so popular theory would have it... I personally think that zombies have risen from the grave and ate the part of the brains in all of the Sony development staffs heads that control Initiative and not totally sucking crusty monkeybutts in general. Remeber that old monkey doll Monchichi? The development staff at Sony would suck those monkey butts too, if only they had the chance. They should design a game where you are a Sony PS2 designer and you chase around little Monchichi creatures and suck their lives out of their crusty monkey butts. You know? Put a little realism in the industry. The kids would be behind you all the way.

What really impresses me about this console is something that as of yet is largely unused on the PS2, which is the Ilink port. The Ilink s400 connector is the fastest connection available for computer hardware that deals with a great deal more data than what these games amount to, and that tells me that if you could network two playstations together (or attach an external device) that the connection would be seamless and smooth, since the Ilink convention was made for larger amounts of data than the playstation console would have to transfer.. And how they got me to buy this console was by sticking an Ilink port on it that I would never use and they seemingly never had any intention to touch. It is like some doofus with one of those Dooley trucks that only uses the truck to buy groceries... It's just flash that will never be used or needed. Now I am one of those doofus like people that bought something because of "power power power monster trucks wrestling is real" and as it turns out I am a complete idiot and have no idea what I am doing because anyone that listens to a WORD THAT THE SONY DEVELOPMENT STAFF SAYS IS A FOOL. Thank you for staying with me so far, by the way. Most people have moved on by now. But not you... No, you still read on and take the punishment even though you know it isn't getting any better... Well, you are like me, then. I feel like that, too, ever since I bought this playstation2. I feel like I could have spent my 300+ bucks on something more worthwhile and meaningful like crack and prostitutes. When you start thinking that then maybe.. MAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYBE..... You got lied to by the bushido. Yup, Sony lied. No big deal. If they would just make a freaking game that is longer that FIVE WORTHLESS MINUTES maybe I could find it in my heart to forgive the pathetic souls that surely will forever wait in purgatory and be "next" the rest of eternity for ever releasing this product with no intention of finishing it.

I have heard some complaints about the DVD feature and I also initially had a problem with the screen fading but this was solved by plugging the console straight into the TV. Problem solved. If you have a relatively new TV that isn't from the early VCR age you should have no complications with this feature, either, despite the bad rap it earned when first released. I won't complain about that. And I also won't tell you how to hook it up, either, so don't email me. I don't care if you hook up this console or not. What you do with your 300-something dollar console and your 50 dollar five minute games is your own problem.

Overall this machine has not let me down in the remote times when it is actually performing during a five minute game.. I have noticed many of the games tend (that is a nice word synonymous with "ARE EXACTLY") to be clones of previous games released, which really annoys me, but when I play this console on a game that I like I am always glad I spent the money on it. EWW did I say that? I meant that I am glad I own it. With how much you will pay for games they could have easily given this console away for free and make a killin. Or they could charge us all this money for the console and then make the games a little cheaper? Ahhhh, don't need to make them any LONGER... I know LONG isn't exactly on the charts for a Sony designer.. I mean, look at the hot rod cars they drive, bought with YOUR hard earned money that you shelled out for a lie- enough to make you certain that it isn't just the games that aren't very long, compensation wise.
As of yet there are only a handfull of games for the PS2 that make it in the arena with the other latest and greatest game machines out there, but those few games that have put PS2 on the map have done that and then some- you won't get bored of the good games. But like I said earlier you HAVE to rent the games first because Sony will put any crap a software company will hand them and box it up and put it on the shelf. They don't care. As long as they get paid- and that is the mentality you are dealilng with. As long as THEY get paid. NO, they don't care about you and NO they aren't trying to really improve the product for any reason than making money. Money is all this company cares about any more so don't trust em. DO NOT TRUST THEM. Rent it first. Don't hand these idiots any more money than you have to.

On a less positive note, IF you are one of those unfortunate souls that has a "bad" playstation, you may go to http://www.us.playstation.com/customer_service/customer_support.jhtml and research the problem you are having. If you have any inquiries, the number for Playstation is ***800-345-7669***. Maybe you could call every time you buy a game and it is only five minutes long before you win? Surely there is a skip in the disk that jumps over like 99 percent of the game, right? Maybe you better call them every stinking time that happens, huh?
Don't tell them I sent you.

P.S.- Do not use the PS2 console as a form of body armor. Although it held it's own against a golf club ( a nine iron of average quality) it was decimated when put to the bullet test. The PS2 attempted to suck it up but fell apart after about the 20th round hit it. So, to all of you law enforcement personnel out there... And even you criminals that need to rob places to be able to afford more crappy five minutes games... do NOT use the ps2 console as body armor. It just doesn't work. I know it COSTS as much as body armor, they didn't miss that detail, but it just won't stop a bullet.

P.P.S. Are some words misspelled here? Oh, I am really sorry. I am working on that. We realize that there are some undeveloped aspects of my review and we have a team of experts working toward that solution... Yet we haven't came out with one smidgeon of a solution in a year now... Yes, life's good when you are a Sony customer..
