The Bottom Line Be kind to young graduates. It's a jungle out there!
I work with a group of medical professionals, and every year we have a couple young people graduate from our three year training program. Every year, we chip in to get the graduates a gift, and I am generally the one who organizes this endeavor and purchases the gift. So, I thought I would share what has worked for us, and maybe it will help someone else with a graduation gift dilemma. My favorite place to go to for graduation gifts these days is the Things Remembered store. These stores exist in shopping malls all over the place, and they specialize in gifts that are personalized by engraving. There is just something special about an engraved gift that automatically makes the gift seem classier; people really appreciate the effort and care that goes into the engraving. Everything in the Things Remembered store can be engraved, sometimes with the person's name, and sometimes with a customized saying or plaque. They have all sorts of items: photo frames, clocks, jewelry boxes, home décor items, storage boxes, items related to various hobbies, and lovely pen sets, to name just a few. This year, I got the graduates something called a "Book Clock". It is a wooden hinged "book" that can stand upright on a book case, desk or mantel. The left side can hold a large photo, and the right side contains a very attractive clock. Below the clock is a plaque, which we engraved with the graduates' name and a congratulatory message. My gifts were a hit, and were well worth the $60 (plus the $3 per word engraving fee) that we paid. In fact, my coworkers and I all thought the gift looked more expensive than it was. The year before, I got the graduate an engraved, three-piece desk set in a cherry, wood finish. Things Remembered has many styles of desk sets for the graduate about to start an office job. When my son graduated from high school, I got him a rather cool, digital clock/ pen holder thingy (where the time flashes in various colors!). Engraved with a congratulatory note, of course! Now, despite the above, I don't ONLY shop in Things Remembered! Depending on the field of study, or the type of work the graduate will do, books can be a wonderful gift (or a gift card to a book store). We have given classic texts to some of our graduates. Naturally, in this day and age, graduates will nearly always appreciate cash or a gift card. Maybe a gift card for some gas for their car, or music for their MP3 player. Maybe some desired software or a favorite video game. Depending on their hobbies, a subscription to Netflix or some movie tickets might be a great answer, too. Will the graduate be doing any travel? Perhaps they are ready to ditch the backpack and duffel bag and upgrade to a sturdy piece of luggage. Will they travel overseas? Make their arrival easier by giving some local currency. In any case, graduation gifts are a nice way to honor someone's educational accomplishments. Unfortunately, many graduates are struggling to find a job these days. Have a job for them? Know someone who might be hiring? A good tip like that would probably be the best gift of all! |
