I honestly don't know WHY some of you on here are having so many problems using Priceline. First I'll give you a list of all the hotels across the country that I've booked through Priceline, along with the price I got and the typical room rates for the same hotel. BTW, these are all considered 4-Star Deluxe hotels on Priceline. Those are the only hotels that I've requested.
*PL = Priceline Price
*RR = Normal Rack Rate for this hotel
Washington DC - Capital Hilton (PL - $50 , RR - $200)
Washington DC - Renaissance Hotel (PL - $50 , RR - $150)
New York, NY - Pennsylvania Hotel (PL - $75 , RR - $175)
New York, NY - Hotel Wales (PL - $90, RR - $265)
New York, NY - W Hotel Times Square (PL - $100 , RR - $270)
San Francisco, CA - SF Downtown Marriott (PL- $75 , RR-$170)
LA,CA-Westin Century Plaza Hotel&Spa(PL-110, RR-245)
Beverly Hills, CA - Hotel Sofitel (PL - $120, RR - $300)
When you book on PL you just have to make sure you only book the deluxe level of hotels. I can't vouch for anything in the lower class level. Second, I always start my bidding at $50, then add $10 to my bid until I get a bite. Just ignore the prompt that tells you that you're bidding too low for a Deluxe level hotel. As you can see from the list of hotels I've stayed at above, the Deluxe level gives you nothing but well-respected name brand properties. I've never had any trouble checking in...as a matter of fact, I've received my room even when a hotel was horribly overbooked and they were trying to cancel people due to excess reservations. They had to guarantee my room because they'd already been paid for it. So while yes its true that once you book you can't cancel your reservation, the fact that you've prepaid means they can't cancel on you either!
I am a deliriously satisfied priceline customer and I've been using it to book virtually ALL of my personal hotel reservations for the last two years.
P.S. I also used it to get a KILLER deal on my 2000 Lexus GS 300!
