Zone Alarm is a very handy and useful program that is easy to install and configure. The basic version is free and that is a big bonus for most users.
I recently had a year long contract with one of the high speed cable companies here in Canada. basically my job was to go around the city and fix any access problems. the sad part was I had to fix a lot of ZA problems.
It was a regular mishap that someone would download it and install it and then lose all internet connection. Be sure to turn OFF your virus scanner and also know if the program corrupts you may need to reinstall windows.
Sometimes reinstalling ZA lets you get a connection again but sometimes the only other thing is to reformat and reinstall your OS. I once manually deleted all files from windows and from the registry but still no go. I also noticed that people who deinstalled ZA would sometimes also lose connection.
Overall though it is a fairly good program and you cannot beat the price. One last word also is in order. When you install it on any cable companies system you tend to share the network with others through a router. you will think dozens of people are trying to hack you but actually they are not. If you look closely the IP addresses will very close to yours and what is actually happening is that when a PC comes on-line the PC is sending out a signal to everyone looking for a server.
What to watch for is a repeated block in ZA over several minutes. Keep a log and send it to your ISP and they should be able to deal with it.
