Pros:moves at a good pace, great for newbies
Cons:kind of short
The Bottom Line: If you are new to fantasy genre, this book is a good introduction. Doesnt confuse you with hard to pronounce names and places.
This is one of the first fantasy novels I ever read as an adult. It was recommended to me by a friend who is an authority on fantasy novels, so I bought it, used, as it is out of print now. I read it rather quickly, for one reason, I wanted to hurry and see what was going to happen, and for another, it is rather short.
However, I am now a fan of Katherine Kurtz. Her writing, though a bit lacking in details, is very exciting, and she has a way of making you see what she sees with no menced or unnecessary words in the way. The story is very interesting, the entire premise of the opressed bloodline with psychic powers and the blood hiding in their future king. It is a fast moving book. But it leaves you aching for the next one, which usually from what I have seen is no problem to find even though it is out of print. I saw tons of them on Amazon for sell.
Overall, this is an excellent book for someone not familiar with the fantasy genre. It doesnt overload you with place and character names that are too hard to pronounce, complicated explanations of spacecraft and the like. And it is set in a renaissance type era, which will be interesting to fans of that time period, as I am.
