Don't Be A Statistic: Shopping Cart Safety

The Bottom Line Be safe when using a shopping cart!  It can happen to anyone.

Every year, more than 20,000 children are treated in ER's because of injuries suffered from shopping carts.  I am embarassed to say that my daughter was one of them.

Friday night, my son and I made a trip to our local Target.  I still use my cart protector (germs...gross!) and of course the seatbelt.  Unfortuantely, my toddler can unbuckle those belts that have been used hundreds of thousands of times.  I turned away for a brief second, delegating that my son stay with her so she doesn't fall....long enough to swipe my credit card when I heard a thud, followed by gasping (witnesses) and then screaming!  My daughter had fallen out.  Of  course I told her to stay put but she knows my son is a softie and as soon as I wasn't paying 100% attention, she requested that he carry her and she was diving towards him.  Of course he wasn't paying attention (he is almost 10).

We were very fortunate!  My daughter had a guardian angel on her side.  Her only complaint was her arm, right behind her wrist and after 3+ hours in the ER, it was determined she had a fractured radius and ulna.  Because of swelling, she can't be casted until Tuesday, but she is a trooper.

Needless to say, the next day I went to return something to Target and I swore I would never use a cart again.  That didn't last 15 minutes before I put her back in one.  She was running around the store like a goof, of course drawing unwanted attention to her already broken arm.  It wasn't until then that I really realized how often parents HAVE to look away or aren't paying 100% attention.  When you are looking for an item on a shelf.  When you are unloading the grocery cart.  When you are swiping a credit card, like me.  It can happen to anyone.  It happened to me.

I feel horrible, embarassed, guilty, angry, sad...I went through the whole range of emotions.  I am the mom "whose child fell from a grocery cart."  I don't want this to happen to anyone else!!!  If your child is able to unbuckle seatbelts in grocery carts, find another option.  Many stores have carts with cars attached or an extra sitting area lower in front of the cart.  Be safe!
