The Bottom Line He's the Prince of *******ing Darkness! Sharoooooon!
Or should that be"Still Raining as Prince of Darkness brings us OzzFest 2010." Thousands of metal fans gathered together in the rain on Tuesday, August 24th, 2010 together with myself, my son and three of his friends for one of the most popular Heavy Metal Festivals going, Ozzfest! Thanks Shaaaaroon! Tickets for anywhere under the pavilion were 100 dollars and up, but lawn tickets were only $20.00 bucks a piece, so in we went. SECOND STAGE - Parking Lot and the Warm Up Bands First we headed to second stage located in the parking lot. Apparently Kataklysm didn't perform, I am not sure why. The first band to splash the stage was Goatwh0re. We had seen them before this year with Devil Driver and Behemoth. They put on a very good show to a bunch of wet fans. Amps and the drums were all covered with plastic. Despite their talent, we did not buy one of their concert T-shirts. Sorry, with a name like Goatwh0re, I am not gonna wear it and my son certainly wasn't going to either. Up next was a band called Savior. I wasn't familiar with them, but they put on a good set. A band my son and I first saw warm up for Children of Bodom was on stage next, SkeletonWitch. They have a great metal sound and put on a good show. By this time we were really getting soaking wet. I went and looked at T-shirts. Nick and I got the standard Ozzfest T-Shirt with the devil on the front and tour dates on the back. Shirts were too expensive to try to get too many bands. I liked the one for SkeletonWitch, but again sometimes T-shirts go overboard in shock value and aren't ones I would be able to wear anywhere. Anyway I got a poncho to attempt to keep dry. It was available in YELLOW, the most metal of colors. We returned to the second stage to see Kingdom of Sorrow, a side project of Hatebreed's singer Jimmy Jasta. Not very surprisingly, they sounded a lot like Hatebreed. Thanks to the rain, Drowning Pool and Black Label Society didn't get to go on. I would have liked to have seen Zak Wylde. You may insert your own joke here about the nonstop rain and Drowning Pool. Upgrade! By the time Main stage was ready to begin, we were all wet and uncomfortable and didn't really relish the idea of watching the rest of the show while being rained on. We decided to go to Customer Service and see if we could upgrade our tickets to under cover from the rain. We waited perhaps 10 minutes in line and were told that we could upgrade our tickets from standing in the rain on the lawn to right in front of the stage in the Pit for only ten bucks! I quickly handed the clerk a twenty and got my son and I upgraded Pit passes. His friends did likewise.(Pit passes purchased prior to the show would have set us back $150 each instead of $30) Yes God even watches over metal heads at Ozzfest. Anyway, we got wristbands that let us just flash our wrists and walk right up to the stage where it was dry. MAIN STAGE! Nonpoint from Ftl Lauderdale was first on stage. I hadn't heard them before and I was pretty impressed. They were joined on stage for a couple songs by none other than Drowning Pool. We got to hear Let the Bodies Hit the Floor after all! Devil Driver From California came the metal band Devil Driver. We had seen them before this year when they headlined a show with Behemoth at the Worcester Palladium. They are a five piece melodic death metal band with 2 guitarists, vocalist, bassist and drummer. They put on a great show and got the audience to forget about the miserable rain. Halford - Up next was a metal legend, and one of my favorite metal vocalists, Rob Halford of Judas Priest. He was on stage tonight with his own band, and we learned that it was his birthday! Happy Birthday Rob! He is balder than I am and cuts an imposing figure as he struts out onto stage with a long studded metal jacket. His guitar player played a series of custom Jackson Offset V's that made my son pretty envious! To me, Halford sounded just as he did with the band that made him famous. I really enjoyed his set, and made a note to buy some of his solo stuff. (I think I have everything by Judas Priest in my collection, some of it still even on LP records!) Although he didn't perform any old Judas Priest songs, he did do a couple songs from another side project of his called Fight. Halford also played a few songs from his upcoming solo album that sounded pretty cool. All in all it was a great set that ended with Halford being presented a birthday cake. Motley Crue - Sorry, the little umulats that belong over the o and the u of Motley Crue don't translate well on Epinions and often don't show up properly. Just pretend they are there. If you have read much by me, you probably know that I am a child of the eighties. Heck, Ozzy Osbourne was my FIRST concert back in 1982. Well, I was the metal DJ at WBIM when I first saw a Motley Crue record. I thought the girls were sort of cute, but rather scary too. It took a bit of convincing for me to realize that Nikki Sixx, Mick Mars, Tommy Lee and Vince Neil were actually guys wearing more make up than a Cosmo cover girl. The days of hair metal are over, but the boys from Motley Crue still put on an incredible show and still looked like rock stars even without mascara. For me, it was like a trip down memory lane as they performed songs like Shout at the Devil, Helter Skelter (a Beatles cover they had on their breakthrough album Shout at the Devil), Looks that Kill, Home Sweet Home, and Girls, Girls Girls. It was really cool to see Tommy Lee get out from behind his drum kit to play the piano on Home Sweet Home. Tommy also got the female members of the audience to participate in the show more, much to the delight of those around them. Pyrotechnics exploded several times during their show and flames shot from the building fascade behind them. Motley Crue made me feel like I was back in college again! Despite growing up in the 80s, this was actually the first time I had seen Motley Crue live! We were all glad we did, lighters and cell phones were held high for several songs. THE PRINCE OF DARKNESS HIMSELF Ozzy Osbourne Before Ozzy even hit the stage, he had the fans in hysterics. Up on a huge video screen, Ozzy had planted himself in several popular shows and videos. We saw as Ozzy awoke in his new Avatar body. He had several rude comments for Snookie as he appeared on Jersey Shore, and then he appeared in a Hangover clip as Doug, being dragged out of the crazy gangters trunk. Next Ozzy joined Lady Gaga in her Telephone video. Gaga emerged from prison and got into the infamous Kill Bill wagon to sit next to, not Beyonce, but Ozzy! He looked at Gagas get up and asked What the heck are you wearing? Soon Ozzy was dressed up in a cheerleader outfit, stockings, skirt, wig and all, singing Stop Calling, Stop Calling on my telephone with Lady Gaga and her dancers. He had everyone laughing hysterically. In perhaps an even funnier bit, Bella of Twilight fame met up in the forest with Ozzy as Edward. He asked her if she knew what he was and said say it, say it, say what I am! Finaly Bella whispers, Vampire! Ozzy looks in shock and replies Vampire? Vampires are p***ies, I'm the Prince of F*** Darkness! Finally he appeared on the stage of Stark Industries in a bright red suit and exclaimed I am IRON MAN! Soon, the real Ozzy appeared on stage and burst into a rousing rendition of Bark at the Moon! Ozzy looked as pleased as punch to be there performing for us. I have honestly never seen a man look so happy to be on stage, he was having as much fun performing for us as we were at watching him. He truly is still the Prince of Darkness, albiet with a very light and uplifting attitude! For a guy in his 60's Ozzy still puts on quite the performance! Ozzy cajoled us into waving our arms back and forth, jumping up and down, clapping our hands, or just throwing our hands up in the air and singing along. He dug into the Black Sabbath catalog to perform songs like Fairies Wear Boots. Yes, he also did Iron Man and at the very end Paranoid. He did Scream from his new album, and songs like Mr. Crowley, Suicide Solution and Coming Home. We got sprayed several times with a giant water hose that sprayed some sort of foam on all of us, literally covering us with foam. It did dry up and disappear. Ozzy looked quite pleased with himself every time he brought out the water cannon! During the show, Ozzy introduced his band, giving his new guitar player Gus G. a chance to solo. Rob Nickelson on bass and Adam Wakeman on keyboards also got a chance to show off their skills and finally drummer Tommy Clufetos rose high in the air on his drum platform to show off his drumming skills. For one of the final songs, Ozzy brought out a nine year old guitar player from Japan, who played a Randy Rhodes inspired polka dotted Flying V to perform I Don't Know with Ozzy. The crowd was delighted as Ozzy performed yet another encore, finally closing the show with a rousing rendition of the classic Black Sabbath song Paranoid. We all wandered back out to the parking lot into the rain. |
