The Bottom Line RUSH Alex, Geddy & Neil 35 years of progressive rock.
Somewhere back in 1981 in the suburbs of Boston, MA Mark, Mark, you gotta check this album out! My friend excitedly handed me a new album entitled Moving Pictures by a band called Rush. I had heard of Rush, they had a popular song on the radio called Spirt of the Radio and one of my friends could even play all the hammer ons and offs of the intro solo. Men were moving large works of art while being filmed on the record cover. Ah, I got it. Art moves people. Men were moving the pictures and a film was being made "moving pictures". Soon I was listening to Tom Sawyer, learning the opening harmonics of Red Barchetta on guitar and listening to the amazing drumming of YYZ. A new Rush fan was born, and soon I was picking up albums like Permanent Waves, Exit..Stage Left and 2112. A couple years later I was at the Signals Tour at the Providence Civic Center for my first Rush concert. They were one of the biggest groups of the 1980s. Somewhere back last week, in the same suburbs of Boston My son and one of his friends, now freshman in high school themselves excitedly asked if we could get tickets to see Rush. Nick has listened to many of my Rush albums and he can play several of their songs on guitar. Indeed, the same band that played "in the high school halls, in the shopping malls" back in my day, still maintains popularity in those same halls today! I found out just how popular when I dropped by the Garden box office to get tickets. Only balcony seats were available, the show was nearly sold out. I picked up three tickets so that myself, my son and his friend could go to the Boston Garden, September 14, 2010 and witness Rush - The Time Machine Tour The show opened at 7:40 p.m. with a film about the history of a small bad band called Rash playing at a sausage house in Willowdale. (the name of the actual town Rush members lived). A very large German man tells the sausage house proprietor (played by Geddy Lee himself) that he has a machine that can make the band sound good! After a few adjustments makes Spirit of the Radio sound slow, fast, country, it finally sounds just right, and the real band took the stage! Rush started the show with songs from all over their discography. Free Will from Hemispheres, Subdivisions from Signals, Time Stands Still from Hold Your Fire, a couple songs from a new upcoming album, it was a great set! Geddy, Alex and Neil still sound fantastic! A huge video screen appeared behind the stage so that those of us in the balcony could see the faces of the ants running around on stage. The sound was great, and the light show was fun. The band took a short break, and we went out to get loaded nachos and drinks before the second set. Moving Pictures Redux After the break, and another short funny film, Rush performed live the entire Moving Pictures album! Fans young and old knew all the words to songs Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta and Limelight! There was a great drum solo from Neil Peart on YYZ of course. I had goosebumps running down my back, the set was just amazing. You could just feel the electricity in the sold out crowd watching this awesome album being performed live. Everyone was standing, cheering, clapping and singing along. What you say about his company Is what you say about society Catch the mist, catch the myth Catch the mystery, catch the drift That wasn't all they did for the amazing second set though, they went back further into their catalog and did Closer to the Heart from Farewell to Kings and the Overture from 2112! They closed out the set with Far Cry from their last album Snakes and Arrows. (my only disappointment was not hearing one of my personal favorites, Trees) Encore Encore Show wasn't over yet, the band came out, Alex with a mandoline in hand and performed La Villa Strangiata from Hemispheres. The final song of the night was Working Man from their very first self titled album! Three and a half hours of Rush, outstanding! I Love You, Man! If you saw the comedy I Love you, Man with Paul Rudd and Jason Segel, you would have really appreciated the final Rush film ... Meanwhile Backstage at the end of the concert. Rudd and Segel sneak backstage into Rush's Green Room and Segel eats Neil Peart's special sandwich. Soon Neil, Geddy and Alex come in, rather perplexed to see the two Rush fans in their room. The more Segel and Rudd talk, the more Alex, Geddy and Neil get annoyed. Alex examines their "backstage all access" passes, and realizes they are faked. Soon they are kicked out, but Geddy comes out with Rudd's double neck bass, autographed by the entire band and tells him to keepa slappin tha bass! We finally wandered out of the Garden, picked up a Rush -Time Signals tour shirt and grabbed the next T train home. |
