I first got a peek at a dELiA's catalog my freshman year in high school. I was one of a small crowd at the lunch table sharing the catalog pointing out things that I liked. Within a couple of weeks girls at school were wearing their dELiA's clothes. I was 14, wanted to fit in and was jealous! I decided to borrow a friend's catalogue and beg my mom to do some ordering.
My mom pointed out that the clothes were expensive and I couldn't even try them on before I would get them. I pressed on claiming she was cheap (a mean tactic). She finally gave in an ordered me a "Rainbow Hoodie" sweatshirt. Although I was usually a medium I ordered a large because I wanted the sweatshirt big. If my memory serves me correctly, the sweatshirt was between $40 and $50.
I was ecstatic when the package containing my "cool" sweatshirt arrived. I ripped open the bag and then struggled to pull it over me. "It looks so thin!" my mother said. She was right but had to defend my decision to get it in the first place and told her it wasn't. Worst of all, the large was too small. I insisted upon wearing it. Everyone else was!
The next day I wore it to school. The girls said it looked great but I was cold and uncomfortable. I decided to hang it in the depths of my closet. Perhaps Mom would forget about it.
When I kept seeing girls wear dELiA's brand to school and being absolutely in love with their tiny tees and cargo pants I thought that perhaps I should have known better to order a bigger size. Or, I thought, maybe I was really fat! This is poor news to a high school freshman.
I went home and opened my own dELiA's catalogue. By this time I had received quite a few. No matter how many my mom threw out, there was always one or two in the house. I found the perfect shoes: Red Tread "Galaxy" sneakers, available only through dELiA's. They looked so cute on the model.
This time I convinced my father to get them for me as an early birthday present. When I got them, I was sent a size too big. My father called the customer service line and the lady informed us that we would have to pay to ship the shoes back to dELiA's and then pay for the shipping of the right shoes. My father grew angrier and angrier. How ridiculous to make the customer pay for the company's mistake! But dELiA's was ready to charge.
Feeling like I had caused the problem I assured my dad that my feet had grown a little and I was in between sizes anyway. My feet would probably get bigger anyway. He calmed down and I clunked around in oversize shoes for less than a month, until they started falling apart. $60 shoes couldn't even last 30 days! I had it. All my parent's money was buying was dissatisfaction.
Bottom line, dELiA's is a bunch of hype. Sure the clothes don't look that bad but they're cheaply made, incorrectly sized and the company's policy on returned items is ridiculous!
