"HAPPY HALLOWEEN 4" ............2010Oct 31 '10 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Well there it is. Another list of 10 Halloween flicks to enjoy. If you haven't seen all of them, give them a try. Happy Halloween everyone! Do to unpopular demand, I have decided to turn my trilogy into the dreaded quadrilogy. Yes, this is my fourth list on the topic of 10 best movies to watch for Halloween. With my 2006 list raking in a whopping 22 cents, how could I resist :) . like a Hollywood studio, I just don't know when to quite. My goal is to someday catch and pass the "SAW" movies is sequels. This list contains horror, monsters, and some chills.......Roll it. (10) THE CRAZIES (2010) (R) No, this is not a movie about politicians, but a remake of the 1973 George Romero film. The good people of Ogden Marsh Iowa, are being infected by toxins contaminating there drinking water. The town sheriff, and his wife Played by (Timothy Olyphant) and (Radha Mitchell) attempt to figure out why the towns people are slowly turning into psychopathic murderers. Movie plays like a zombie film, and offers several intense scenes to keep you on the edge of your seat. Fans of "28 days Later" should enjoy this film. (9) DRAG ME TO HELL (2009) (PG-13) Jokingly I told my wife, this would be a great title for our wedding video. She failed to see the humor in it. Director Sam Raimi returns to the horror genre with this film. Christine (Alison Lohman) plays a loan officer, and makes the tough decision of refusing to give an elderly woman a time extension to make her mortgage payment, forcing the old woman to lose her home. The old woman Sylvia Ganush (Lorna Raver) in return puts a curse on Christine that will send her to hell, unless she can figure out a way to get rid of a demon that is coming after her to claim her soul. In classic Raimi fashion, the movie contains gore, laughs, cruelty, and suspense. Some good jump scares will keep you on your toes during this film. (8) THE ORPHAN (2009) (R) In the vein of "The Good Son" -1993 and "The Bad Seed" - 1956. Story tells of a young couple who suffer a miscarriage and decide to adopt a child. The couple already have 2 children. They go to a local orphanage, and adopt a brilliant 9 year old girl. As the story unfolds, we find out that the 9 year old Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman) is not your normal 9 year old child. But a sinister, manipulative girl with other intentions. The performance by (fuhrman) steals the movie. For a child her age, her performance is outstanding. Mabey not so much a horror film, but an entertaining thriller. (7) PARANORMAL ACTIVITY (2009) R For the few who haven't seen this, the title says it all. A young couples home is being invaded by supernatural forces. To try and capture what is going on in their home, they leave a camera on in their room, to try and record the strange happenings. Movie starts off slowly building suspense, and finishes with a shocking bang. I have to admit I was drawn into this film, and it had my imagination running wild. Truly found it to be scary. Not the best acting, but good enough for the shoe string budget it was created with. Great Halloween movie. (6) UNINVITED (2009) PG-13 After spending nearly a year in a mental institution for trying to commit suicide (due to the loss of her mother), Anna (Emily Browning) returns home to her dad, his new fiance, and Anna's sister Alex. Anna tries to get along with her soon to be stepmother Rachel, but has suspicions that her fathers girlfriend may be responsible for the death of her mom. With the help of her sister, they try and prove that Rachel is the killer. Very good performances from all the actors involved, and some good jump scares in this well made mystery. (5) QUARANTINE (2008) R Remake of the movie "REC". Story follows a reporter Angela Vidal (Jennifer Carpenter) and her camerman who are covering an LA fire station crew. The firemen receive a call from an apartment building, and Anna and her camerman Scott tag along to record the men in action. Upon there arrival, the firemen, and Anna are besieged by tenants who are infected with some unknown virus, that turns them into blood thirsty maniacs.......hmm this sounds familiar, (see The Crazies, 28 Days Later) Movie is filmed in the same manner as "Cloverfield" very dark and claustrophobic film. If you like your movies to be shocking, with gory violence, than I highly recommend this movie. (4) THE MIST (2007) R Based on the Stephen King Novella. "THE MIST" starts off with a powerful storm hitting the small town of Bridgton Maine, forcing many of the towns people to go the local grocery store for supplies. Our main character David (Thomas Jane) takes his son and neighbor along for the ride to the local supermarket. Shortly after there arrival, the place is in shambles after an earthquake like disaster hits the area. Afterwards a strange mist engulfs the town. Within it, strange creatures are lurking, and start killing anyone who is foolish enough to venture out in the mist. I found this to be an enjoyable horror flick, with a shocking ending. (3) ROGUE (2007) R Pete (Michael Vartan) travels to Australia to cover a story for a travel guide magazine he works for. Pete and other tourist take a river tour led by there lovely Captain, Kate Ryan (Radha Mitchell). Along the way the group spots a flair a few miles up the river, and decide to investigate. Upon arrival, their boat is damaged by a 30 foot long rogue crocidile. Forced to beach their boat on a very small chunk of land. Our tourist find safety only for a short time, for the small island they're on, is sinking due to the rising tide. Along with beautiful scenery, this movie is loaded with suspense, and surprisingly good FX. This is one large ruthless crock, that shows no mercy for his uninvited guest. Much better story, acting and FX than "LAKE PLACID" (2) NIGHTWATCH (1997) R Pre-"Star Wars" Ewan Mcgregor, Plays a college student who takes a job as a night watchman at an eerie morgue. Is there any other kind? A serial killer is on the loose, and all signs point to Martin (Mcgregor) as the killer. Scenes at the morgue create a creepy atmosphere, and the movie maintains enough suspense, and horror to keep you interested. Also starring Nick Nolte, and Josh Brolin who provides his usual solid performance. (1) WOLFEN (1981) R Here's a blast from the past. Starring Albert Finney, Greogory Hines, and Edward James Olmos. (Finney) plays a detective who is assigned to solve a rash of gruesome murders in New yok City, that appear to be done by animals. This movie came out 6 years before "Predator" so I believe it's the first to use a thermal imaging (infrared) style of filming when the murders are being commited. This movie offers an original, interesting story, and a few good scenes for the gore fans. |
