The Bottom Line Legendary SPOILER drummer Oswaldo "Bob" Barbosa dies at 56 in Florida after a lengthy illness...
The SPOILER mourns the passing of one of its original drummers, Oswaldo “Bob” Barbosa, who was the victim of a cardiovascular illness on October 26, 2010. Bob was a charter member of the South Brooklyn Heavy Metal Champions and sat on the drum throne for Spoiler II through VI. A longtime friend of Alma Merced, he joined the band in the Winter of 1975 and remained until bandmate Robert “the Monster” Echevarria moved from bass to drums for Spoiler VII. Bob next resurfaced with the New York Pimps, a Spoiler splinter group, in 1978 on timbales alongside drummer Jimmy Cazucci. He remained on the South Brooklyn music scene as a DJ until relocating to Chicago during the 90’s. Bob was the innovator of the chess matches that were a idiosyncrasy of the group from the early days of the Spoiler to the last of the Ducky Boys. He was a calculating player and was considered the best alongside Broadway Turk Superstar. The games between the two were considered classics. He also enjoyed woodworking and restoring furniture to a natural wood veneer. His spare time was also spent reading and studying a wide variety of topics focusing on current events. During his early days with the Spoiler he met Sonia Martinez, an original member of the Leatherettes, the Spoiler’s dancing troupe. They married shortly afterward and had two sons, Jentry and Andre. Jentry is currently a rap artist and author in New York City. The Barbosas were long considered the First Couple of the Spoiler infrastructure and often entertained friends and family at dinner parties that were eagerly anticipated and long remembered. Their visits to rehearsals after Bob’s playing days ended were always special occasions for the band members and associates. Bob eventually relocated to Chicago and bought a home where he resided until he was overcome by illness this year. “This is a great loss to all of us,” Superstar was quoted from Spoiler headquarters in Missouri after being informed of Bob’s passing from Alma Merced at their regional office in NYC. “Bob was a legendary figure in the organization and a personal friend. Most of us are still recovering from losing Zing (guitarist Osborne Rampersad) last summer. The four of us, including Alma, were bandmates and played some unforgettable shows together. His impact on our lives will never be forgotten.” |
