DIORIFIC PLASTIC SHINE: Her Lips Dripped with Honey?

Written: Feb 01 '02 (Updated Feb 01 '02)
Pros:long lasting, wears evenly, excellent coverage, gloss is top notch
Cons:expensive, occasionally a case might leak-causing return for exchange
The Bottom Line: DIORIFIC PLASTIC SHINE gives new meaning to that honey lip thing. Excellent durability, coverage, and appearance, the price is high, but well worth it.

"Her lips dripped with honey...."

I finally figured out what that means. I mean, I have read that in novels before, and sappy cards, but I never saw anything that would clarify what someone saw when they wrote something like that.

Then I found DIORIFIC PLASTIC SHINE

Warning to the faithful readers bored to death with plain makeup reviews- this is a plain lip gloss review- no funny stories today.....

As some of you know, I have been investigating the world of high end cosmetics over the last few months. Something I have never opted to buy due to price and not wanting to patronize an industry I had only seen as being a rip off, this whole world is pretty new and interesting to me.

However, since I am a long time makeup veteran, I have to say, that amidst the hoopla, I have actually found some very nice products well worth the time and money to obtain them. Since Epinions has not opted to list these products, I will be reviewing them here from time to time. I want to let people know that these products are out there- people like me who would normally never spend the time or energy looking, but might buy a single product if deemed worthy.

One of these products is by Christian Dior. Probably one of THE most expensive lines carried in these parts, Christian Dior is nothing I was ever interested in trying out. In fact, one day when I was waiting for my husband to return from a huge sale a Target, I was perusing a department store I rarely get to go in.

I had stopped at the Lancome counter to see what kind of gift they were having and after I was done, I wandered over to the Dior counter. The woman there was very young looking, but I could tell that she was actually older than she looked. I was not sure if she was the vulture type (swooping on you to convince you to buy something) or if she would be more relaxed.

Then I saw it - the beautiful turquoise/teal duo of eyeshadow on the display. I HAD to go touch it. When I did, I was hooked. The woman came right over, and the knot in the pit of my stomach grew. I hate high pressure sales. However, she was very nice and extremely helpful. That eyeshadow was one of the most fabulous shadows I have ever tried.

However, this review is not about that. Next time perhaps.

Anyway, over time and after a long conversation with the Dior woman, I decided to try a few Dior things. I went online and met a woman who happened to have access to some DIOR cosmetics. She sold me a few of the lip glosses I had heard so much about.

These are called DIORIFIC PLASTIC SHINE.

DESCRIPTION OF THE GLOSS AND PACKAGING

When I first got them in the mail, I was thrilled. They did not look a whole lot different on the outside, but they sure acted different than any gloss I had tried.

This gloss comes in a very unique tube. A bit ornate for plain oriented people, the tube is shaped like a tapered perfume bottle I have seen in collections from Egyptian tombs. The walls of the tube are double layered so that there is a thick plexiglass wall between the actual product and the outside of the tube. This makes it look like there is more in the tube than there actually is. It is trimmed with gold and the wand, long and straight has a gold handle on it.

The actual amount of product is .19 oz, or 5.5 grams. It looks like a LOT more.

There is an odor to the product, but it is pleasant and not overwhelming like some Estee Lauder products. The consistency is that of honey that is slightly thickened. The shine is absolutely gorgeous. Some of the colors have shimmer, some do not.

It comes in a very fancy gold and blue box- hence you are paying to be pampered here as well as for a tremendous product. I have heard that on occasion, the containers of this gloss do leak, so do not feel badly if you have to return it for another.

HOW DOES THIS GLOSS PERFORM?

When you apply this gloss, it is like thickened honey, but not really sticky. You do not need much. Once it has set on your lips, it acts more like a lipstick, yet has the look of a gloss. The color is more opaque than most glosses, however.

What I particularly love about this stuff is that it lasts for a long time. You can actually eat or drink and still have the look of lipstick on- it wears off evenly so you are not left looking like you have "ring around the lips."

This also is particularly fabulous over lipsticks. Just enough of the color shines through to allow you to create many new shades easily and that are long lasting.

INGREDIENTS
methyl hydrogenated rosinate, ricinus communis (castor oil), glyceryl hydrogenated rosinate, lanolin, buxus chinensis (jojoba oil), pvp/hexadecene copolymer, candelilla cera (candelilla wax), octyl methoxycinnamate, lanolin alcohol, disteardimonium hectorite, methyl methacrylate copolymer, cera alba (beeswax), silica, parfum (fragrance), polyglyceryl-3 polyrincinoleate, propyl gallate, bht. (various colors have different ingredients beyond this).

MY RECOMMENDATION

This stuff is expensive, there are no two ways about it. I purchased mine for various prices, but full price around here, it is $19.50 a tube. Sometimes you can find places online for cheaper prices, as I have. It is well worth the time invested to find some.

I have five colors of this gloss now and I use them sparingly. When I am going out and do not want to waste hours applying lip gloss over and over, I like to use DIORIFIC PLASTIC SHINE. It lasts a long time, looks fantastic, and does not cause my lips to dry out constantly.

I love to use this over the ROUGE ABSOLUE lipstick from Lancome, a moisturizing lipstick. The two products make a fabulous pair if you tend to have dry lips.

If you need a nice glossy lipstick for special occasions or just for going out, I would highly recommend this product. If you use it sparingly, you will get a lot of mileage out of one tube.

Remember, if you ever have a problem with the package leaking, return it for another, it is a known problem with this gloss from time to time.

Colors I have:
Rose Euphoria (357)
Beige Innocence (197)
Red Cheer (757)
Tender Beige (217)
Gallant Rose (287)

The colors offered are very versatile in quite a few beiges, pinks, reds and browns, both cool and warm based.

WEBSITE

You can visit the DIOR website, but be prepared, it takes a LONG time to load everytime you go to a new page- I get frustrated there.....
