| l2g's Full Review: Verizon Mobile Phone Service in Seattle/Tacoma/Eve... |
Rather than droning on and on about all of the virtues of Verizon Wireless's service, maybe this anecdote will give you an idea:
My girlfriend used to work for Verizon. She now works for a competing carrier. That carrier gives their employees sweetheart deals on phones and service (somewhere around $10 a month for 2000 minutes anytime). Yet she still keeps her Verizon service--and pays full price for it. It's that much better.
Local coverage is good--that may not sound very emphatic, but it's still better than others' coverage. We live in the suburbs, and connections tend to be a little dicey there no matter who you use. But we have a land-line phone, and forwarding our calls from our Verizon phones to local numbers doesn't cost us anything (at least not that I can recall). So we still like to use our Verizon numbers as our primary numbers.
Most everywhere else in the Seattle area, coverage is solid. Outside the Seattle area, some kind of roaming is almost always available, and there are calling plans with generous roaming terms. Since I've been with Verizon for so long, I'm allowed to change plans whenever I feel like it.
There are a wide variety of phones available, from the gee-whiz Palm-compatible Kyocera SmartPhone on down to the average little Nokia. If you prefer flip-phones, your choices are a bit more limited. We each have the LG TM510 and like it just fine. (Other flip-phones are Motorola's plain-jane StarTAC and the horrifically overpriced V60c.)
Most of the phones can also carry Verizon's MobileWeb service. If you've never tried to browse the Web on a mobile phone, brace yourself--it's a very stripped-down experience. But it works. Verizon's service and the built-in software from Phone.com makes it about as painless as it can possibly be. Occasionally there are glitches that cause MobileWeb to stop working, but customer service can usually resolve them quickly. (If you already have an ISP and portable computer that you prefer to work with, most Verizon phones can be used as mobile modems as well. The speed is roughly the same as a 14.4 kbps modem.)
Customer service has always been very friendly and helpful to me. Sometimes they aren't able to fix my problem, but it never seems to be for lack of trying. I've never had a problem with getting a serious issue resolved.
I can't recommend these folks enough. Don't even think about any other carrier. Peace.
