I'd intended to try three online photo printing services, compare the prints, and decide on the best. I tried my local store, and based on Epinions reviews, Shutterfly and EZPrints.
EZ Prints won hands down. The local shop cropped the photos, due to equipment limitations. My first Shutterfly order was not even processed for a week, after I had received two rounds of EZ Prints orders.
EZPrints picture upload is great, using a Java applet in the web browser, and works from Linux.
Cropping was the biggest issue for me. Different digital cameras produce slightly different shapes of pictures. Mine (a Cannon Elph) produces slightly square frames. EZ-prints lets me choose how to handle this either cropping or fitting the image with a white border on one side. Great!
EZPrints offers a free set of prints to help calibrate your monitor's color, an indication they are oriented to more serious customers.
While the selection of print types is not the broadest, it's good. You can also order things like greeting cards, calendars and mugs. You can order panoramic prints up to 1' wide and 24' long! Prices are good, shipping options reasonable, order tracking is provided, and you get a break for ordering multiples of the same print. All my orders shipped the same day.
I reported some minor bugs in the website (which is, frankly, kind of ugly), and received helpful responses from customer service.
The resulting prints meet my quality expectations. I don't need consumer features like borders, text, or red-eye reduction. I do that on my PC. EZ Prints concentrates on the printing. I will use them from now on.
Update: I've now ordered 5 times, and am fully satisfied. My largest print was 20x30 inches, and I'm sending off a 1 foot wide by 10 foot long panorama now.
