The Bottom Line Showing a stepchild how you feel about them goes a long way.
Before I met my husband, Greg, I had a 5 month old daughter. Her father was around when he wanted to be. Greg had no children. I let him know upfront that accepting me meant accepting her also. He understood and he did. As we got serious and she got older, her father became upset. He didn't like how my daughter was looking at Greg as her dad. Greg treated her like his own. We had to deal with my daughter's father and his family not accepting Greg. They tried to drill in my daughter's mind, Greg was not her father and she didn't have to respect him. I didn't know how much Greg could take. It was tough on him but he stuck it out and continued to show her his love. I didn't want to go back and forth having to tell my daughter who to listen to. I back tracked many times getting into arguments with them but showing her worked out in the end. They could say what they wanted but she realized the truth. She says she has two dads but Greg is the best dad. It is not easy dealing with these circumstances and It would've been nice if I had made her with Greg. I think you have to keep showing that stepchild that they are not a stepchild insteading of saying it. They believe what they see.
