The Bottom Line My favorite foreign films drawn from my 2010 reviews.  These are the films I would recommend to someone interested in knowing more about the genre.

I reviewed a majority of the winners and nominees for Best Foreign Language Film during 2010.  From those reviews, I have selected my ten favorites.  Some of these films did not win an Oscar, while some of the Oscar winners did not make my list.  If I had to pick ten foreign films to recommend to someone to represent the genre, this would be my list:

Secret in Their Eyes - This was the deserving winner of the 2010 Best Foreign Language Film.  I screened all of the nominees and found myself in agreement.  A love story that disguises itself as a murder mystery.  Argentina.

A Prophet (Un Prophet) - This film was also nominated for Best Foreign Language Film of 2010.  In a weaker year, it would have won.  It had tough competition.  Another crime film, this one follows an Arab man as he rises to power inside the French prison system.  France.

Stoning of Soroya M. - This film was not even nominated for Best Foreign Language Film in 2009, but should have been.  This story is based on actual events.  The visual depictions are graphically wrenching as this story conveys the reality of honor killings.  It is set in Iran during 1986.

Departures - Even if The Stoning of Soroya M. had been nominated in 2009, it would have been edged out by this incredible story of death and dignity.  This film won Best Foreign Language Film in 2009.  It is a touching, artistically rendered story.  Japan.

Lives of Others - This film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2007.  It is an interesting examination of government intervention in East Germany before the Berlin Wall came down.  German.

The Sea Inside - Winner of the Best Foreign Language Film for 2005.  This drama tells the true story of Ramon Sampedro, who fought for thirty years to exercise his right to die.  An emotionally charged topic that provides the foundation for incredible drama.  Spain.

Nowhere in Africa - 2002 winner of the Best Foreign Language Film.  This film examines a Jewish family that escapes to Kenya during the rise of Hitler.  Their family does not flee Germany in time and is trapped behind.  A great period piece.  German.

Elling - 2002 was another deep year for Best Foreign Language Film.  I believe Elling would have won had it been nominated in 2003 when the mediocre Barbarian Invasions got the nod.  It tells an interesting story of friendship between two institutionalized men who must help each other survive on their own.  Norway.

Kolya - The Best Foreign Language Film of 1996.  I am digging back a bit deeper here to pull out a treasure that should not be lost to time.  An excellent film about a bachelor who is duped into raising a five-year-old that he is not related to.  An amazing drama.  Czech Republic.

Indochine - I go even further back to recommend this excellent winner of Best Foreign Language Film in 1993.  The film creates a personification of the relationship between France and Viet Nam.  The result is a creative and dramatic story of personal relationships with a broader parallel.  France.

I have two dozen more Foreign Language titles that were close. The competition was fierce, but these ten films were head and shoulders above the competition.  The absence of some Oscar winners is intentional.  My taste does not always agree, and the quality of films varies from year to year.  While 2010 and 2002 were great years, there are years like 2003, where there was not much to choose from.  I hope you have enjoyed this list.  It is a great place to start if you are just getting your feet wet in this genre.
