Freeware Game Review - The Journey Down: Episode One - Over The Edge

The Bottom Line This first episode of The Journey Down really makes you want the next episode to come out quickly.  Absolutely beautiful background graphics.

The Journey Down - Episode One: Over the Edge is a cracking little adventure game which features Bwana and Kito, struggling to pay off their debts, and an amazing adventure that begins when a woman enters the office looking to charter a plane.

The storyline is good, hinting at a much larger world outside the immediate locations used in the game, and a conspiracy that only begins to be hinted at in this first episode.  The characters are wacky (and quite lovable),  the dialogue is often funny; it's also good at hinting at clues without revealing too much and making the puzzles too easy.  The puzzles themselves are quite nicely ranged in terms of both difficulty and variety, though one or two of them seemed a bit random to me.  More than compensating for this were some crazy yet somehow logical solutions to some of the puzzles.

Graphically The Journey Down is little short of a masterpiece in some ways.  While the character sprites do sometimes look out of proportion, they're well animated and expressive.  The backgrounds are gorgeous, and while opinion has been somewhat split on the AGS forums as to whether a higher resolution should have been used, the low-res, highly detailed backdrops are brilliantly evocative of the best examples of adventure games during the 16-bit days.  Some of the backgrounds definitely called to mind the style of Monkey Island 2, but are completely unique in their own right.

Musically the game is awesome too - the reggae funk music is brilliant and often the action in cut scenes are choreographed to the music extremely well.  Maybe there could have been more sound effects, but why get in the way of such good music?!

Being episodic the game is somewhat short, but it's a satisfying experience and will take maybe a couple of hours to complete, give or take half an hour.  I'm certainly looking forward to episode 2.
