Unfortunately, from time to time, an appliance will break down to the point you have to replace it. Some of the simple problems can be fixed but they aren't built to last forever. We get used to the particular operating habits of something and then we have to replace it and get used to a new one. I know this isn't a big deal when it comes to a vacuum cleaner, but we found this to be the case, recently, but the differences made the new one even better than it's predecessor.
After the replacement of several belts and a couple of hoses our old Kenmore vacuum decided it wan't going to be a productive member of our household. Fortunately it was almost Christmas and my son decided he would purchase a new one for us. I know that some people don't want a useful item as a gift but I always believed that there was nothing wrong with one item each year. We were very surprised with the gift and we were also surprised on the advancements that had been made since the old one was purchased 12 years ago.
Some Nice Features
There are several features of our new Kenmore Progressive Canister Vacuum 20912. First is the Power-Mate head which has several features of it's own. There is a pile height pedal that allows you to adjust how far the beater is from the base of the carpet. The thicker the carpet the higher you want the adjustment so you don't damage the pile of your rug. You also have a handle release to disengage the handle to be used when you're ready to clean your house. The hose connects to the canister at a swivel which allows the hose to turn without moving the canister. This is helpful when using in smaller areas.
The handle has an on/off selector but also lets you use the suction without engaging the power-mate head. This is helpful when doing a floor where you don't want the beater operating. The end of the handle ends in a nice hand grip which is easy to hold with one hand while doing stairs or behind a desk or table.
Attachments
There are the standard attachments. There is a fabric brush, a floor brush for when you detach your power-mate for vacuuming large tile or hardwood areas. A crevice tool for small tight places. A dusting brush for doing curtains, tops of furniture, or electronic equipment.
Even though these attachments are very useful, the one I found most useful was the power-mate junior. This is basically a miniature of the large floor power-mate which is probably one third the size. This little model does a wonderful job on stairs, a couch, small floors like a foyer or a small laundry room where the larger power-mate would be hard to handle. Just remove the full sized power-mate and attach the junior and you're ready for some serious cleaning.
Service
One of the things I've always been impressed with, is Sears service. For a small fee they cover every thing that could go wrong. If you should break a hose (which has happened twice to other models) it will cost you $60 to get a new one. If you have the service contract it will cost you nothing. You can bring it in to the store once a year and have it cleaned and have the belt checked or replaced if necessary. They have some of the parts on hand but if you have to order them it only takes a few days before they come in. The bags are a standard variety and can be found in every Sears store.
Overall
We have been very pleased with our Kenmore Progressive Canister Vacuum 20912 since we received it last Christmas. It has performed as advertised and the 12 amp motor is more than a match for any house cleaning we've found so far. The bag is easy to replace and only takes a few seconds. I've been impressed with the instruction manual that came with the vacuum because there is a trouble shooting section and a section that describes how to repair common problems like a broken drive belt. This is a household appliance that anyone would be proud to own and use.
