The Bottom Line Let's uncover your super power with this write-off (translation: just how much of a geek are you these days?)
2011 is a testing ground for the many new innovations in the world of comic books with Marvel and DC Comics equally sharing the spotlight. Both companies are banking at exposing more of its product to the mainstream audience most notably through its expanding movie franchises.
Marvel Comics really changed its look when Disney acquired them last year. Long time CEO Joe Quesada stepped aside and is now overlooking the movie division for the company. It has successfully tested the waters when Iron Man hit all the right notes and further followed it with Iron Man 2 and The Incredible Hulk. What Marvel did was create a cohesive universe in one broad stroke. It will further be punctuated when Thor (May) and Captain America: The First Avenger (July) expand on that notion setting the seeds for The Avengers movie in 2012. The one that seems to be overlooked is X-Men: First Class (June) as it is considered as a prequel to the first three X-Men movies set apart from the other Marvel films. It's also good to see Marvel on television again with the incredible hit Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. I can't believe how much I have enjoyed this animated show that really captures the feeling of the original comic books. DC Comics is also testing the waters by pushing Green Lantern into the stratosphere and hoping that this is the beginning on a new franchise. With a movie starring Ryan Reynolds in June and Green Lantern: The Animated Series premiering near the end of 2011. DC and Warner Bros. are hoping that they see green throughout the year. The Dark Knight Rises has been casting for Christopher Nolan's third installment to his trilogy with Anne Hathaway (Catwoman), Tom Hardy (Bane), and Joseph Gordon-Levitt joining the cast. DC Entertainment has really restructured the company with the publishing division still stationed in New York while the movie and entertainment division is in California. The creation of DC Entertainment allows for tighter continuity in its movie dealings and creates a shared universe between properties. So it's not surprising to hear that another Batman and Superman movie are in the works, along with Green Lantern and Flash. The DC Universe Animated Original Movies division is still producing high-quality adaptations of comic book stories with Green Lantern: Emerald Knights and Batman: Year One to be released later this year. Smallville is coming to an end after an incredible 10-year run. A new Wonder Woman television show is slated for production. The long-awaited DC Universe Online is an amazing MMORPG that is really turn heads. But it all comes back to the source material. It's amazing that comic books still even exist in its present form considering how the digital age is sweeping over the world. However, there is something to be said to be able to hold a book in your hands and feel its power emanating through the pages. It's also a testament that Action Comics, one of the oldest titles still in publication, recently reached a monumental 900 issues. It's a great achievement and shows that this medium has a lot to offer. To show that respect, the first Saturday in the month of May has become a growing tradition in the comic book industry. On May 7, 2011, the comic book industry will once again celebrate Free Comic Book Day for the tenth year. This annual promotion, which started back in 2002, is designed by the North American comic book industry to help bring in new readers into comic book stores. This is also done in conjunction with the release of Thor on May 6. The purpose of this event is threefold: first, to introduce new readers to the medium; second; calling back former comic book readers; and last, to thank the current comic book buyers for their support. Major publishers produce a special edition to give away as a promotion for both the company and the characters that they publish as they try to attract new readers into the fold. There are an array of comic books available, ranging from superheroes from DC and Marvel, to traditional ones like Archie and Disney, and even Manga and other independent publishers. Some noted titles available this year are: • Green Lantern Flashpoint Special Edition and Young Justice/Batman Brave and Bold Super Sampler from DC Comics • The Amazing Spider-Man from Marvel Comics • Pep Comics from Archie Comics • Kung Fu Panda and Richie Rich from Ape Entertainment • Darkwing Duck and Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers from BOOM! Studios • Avatar: The Last Airbender and Star Wars: Clone Wars from Dark Horse Comics and so much more. For those HeroClix fans, be sure to get the exclusive Free Comic Book Day figure with the release of Green Lantern, as a part of the release of the Green Lantern movie. This figure is courtesy of WizKids/NECA. So what does this have to do with anything at all? In celebration of all the festivities surrounding this popular genre, the fourth annual Funny Pages Write-Off begins again. Write a review related to comic books and comic strips. Notice I say comic books and not just super-heroes. It can be about comic books (duh), graphic novels, movies, toys, clothes, television shows, cartoons, novels, video games, and anything else you can think of. Did you ride the Superman roller coaster at Six Flags? That totally counts for this. Did you visit Metropolis, Illinois, the "Hometown of Superman?" That counts as well. Anything related to comic books counts. Even better, find obscure references that mention anything about comic books. For example: The movie Office Space implements a quick-rich scheme based on the machinations that happened in Superman III. This will be the summer's blockbuster write-off so have fun from now until the end of July. Give me a shout in the comments section if you do participate. I'll list and link your review(s) to this page.
