The Bottom Line If you haven't seen any of the films on this list, I highly recommend you search them out. I consider them mandatory viewing.

A list of the top 10 horror movies is a difficult list to make, because there are all sorts of criteria that can go into why a certain movie is on the list. This is especially true when you have a lot of people on a place like epinions, where people are familiar with the genre and know what they are talking about.

I've made this list with two things in mind: I've picked movies that I like, and I've picked movies that are good, so there aren't any guilty pleasures on this list.

10. Saw (2004) - While the franchise started to go downhill very quickly after the first film, Saw is a fantastic psychological thriller with a great storyline an premise. Sure, it's gained a bad reputation because of its franchise, but the original film is a very well made thriller.

9. Alien (1979) - An extremely suspensful science fiction horror film. In a way, it is a much more modern version of 1950s B-Movies. One of the most iconic franchises of all time with special effects that hold up to this day.

8. The Exorcist (1973) - While this film has been refrenced to death, it is a very well made film. Whether you find it to be scary or not, it's hard to argue with the fact that it was one of the most frightening films of its day. Also note the groundbreaking special effects by Dick Smith.

7. [Rec] (2009) - Rec is a very little known Spanish movie that came out in 2009, and it is the scariest horror film to come out in the last decade. It was one of the first films to frighten me in a very long time. It was remade into a movie called Quarenteen, but [Rec] is the much better film in my opinion. You just can't beat the last 10 minutes.

6. Last House on the Left (1972) - Sure, it's far from a perfect film, and there are flaws present all over the palce. I still give it credit as one of the most effective horror films, and one of the most shocking films ever made. Many people are put off by the strange comic relief and low budget, but Last House on the Left is a raw, visceral film that captured the evil of humanity better than any other film I've ever seen. Due to some of the most disturbing shots depicting rape and murder ever, many have compared the second act of this movie to watching a snuff film. Proceed with caution on this one.

5. Frankenstein (1931) - Any of the 1930s Universal horror movies could have been put here, but Frankenstein will always be my favorite. Universal Studios created some of the most iconic faces in horror movie history throughout the 30s with characters like Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolfman, and the Mummy. While not the true pioneers, these films are some of the earliest Horror films to come out of Hollywood.

4. Suspiria (1977) - This is probably the least recognize able film on this list. This is an Italian film directed by Dario Argento, and it's the most iconic film of his career. Many fans of European Horror movies have seen this film, but most American mainstream fans haven't. The film's imagery is some of the best ever filmed, and the atmosphere is hard to compete with. The atmosphere is surreal and dreamlike, which creates a one of a kind viewing experience.

3. Night of the Living Dead/Dawn of the Dead/Day of the Dead - While a three way tie can seem like a cop out, choosing which of these three movies is the best is like choosing which Star Wars movie is the best. All three films are great in their own right, and all deserve equal recognition. Night of the Living Dead is a fantastic, genre-defining horror classic. Dawn of the Dead is a great action/horror movie with fantastic characters and groundbreaking gore effects. Day of the Dead is a dark, claustrophobic film that is high on gore, but even higher on tense characters and plot. All three are very well made low budget horror movies that defined the modern zombie movie. Mandatory viewing by far.

2. Halloween (1978) - Halloween is a film that defined a generation of horror movies. Halloween was independently made and produced, and grossed a ton of money after its release. It is a very suspenseful thriller, and the final 20 minutes will keep you on the edge of your seat until the credits. A very recognizable movie that has become an icon. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend checking it out.

1. Psycho (1960) - Psycho is arguably the first modern horror movie. There's no doubt in my mind that it is the most important horror movie ever made, because of all the boundaries that it pushed and the amount of filmmakers that it influenced. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, a lot of thought and work went into this movie, and it is still an effective and creepy film to this day. The only problem with this movie is how the plot has been revealed to just about everybody, because the plot is one of the driving factors behind the scares. If you are a true horror fan, check out Psycho. All the hype is true.
