Rocketgirl's Full Review: Mother Earth News Magazine
If you are concerned about the environment and are interested in conserving resources, this magazine should interest you. What I especially like about it is that is not overly preachy. Nor does it attempt to make you feel guilty for using resources you might not have a choice over, or maintaining a lifestyle that may be considered consumptive. It states in simple terms what a person can do to contribute to preservation on a small scale or a big one.
Because I am a person with a limited time to read, I especially like the "Bits and Pieces" section. These are half and quarter page articles on hot issues of the day. These articles range from endangered species, to ways to conserve electricity, to new ways to clean up toxic spills. It is sometimes amazing to read about ingenious technologies devised by man to "save our planet."
"Natural Remedies" is another interesting section. This department features natural plants that have been used successfully to treat various illnesses; a natural alternative to drugs. Bits and Pieces and Natural Remedies are probably my two favorite departments.
The magazine has the usual departments contained in most magazines: letters, book reviews, classified ads, recipes. All are insightful and well-informed. These sections make you think about the world around you.
The feature articles are more in depth and informative. As I stated before, the authors write to inform, not to preach or make you feel guilty. They try to present balanced articles, with both pros and cons of the problem. There seems to be no real political agenda. Each article has information for the reader who wants to learn more and/or where to write to help influence public opinion.
Not all articles are environmentally oriented per se, but do emphasize living simply. Some articles discuss gardening issues, for example, but may lean toward how to most effectively use a plot of land without damaging it. Or alternatives to poisons for eradicating insects. Other articles are geared toward home improvement and construction tips. New and innovative tools are discussed. These articles are perfect for those who find tips given by Good Housekeeping, Sunset, and other magazines that carry home and garden information, much beyond their budget.
Each magazine contains about 100 pages. I feel this is a pretty good value for the money, $19.95 for six issues per year. Especially because it isn't so loaded with ads as many magazines are. Most of the ads that are here are conservation related gadgets and information. There are some nice photos to accompany the articles. The design is also straightforward without a lot of fancy-schmancy artwork to distract from the content of the articles.
Overall, I would recommend this magazine to conservation minded. I find it very informative and have taken many of its tips to heart. It's amazing how many simple things you can change and not even realize you have, to help the world be a better place to live in.
