Action, adventure --- this is the stuff of GREAT weekend entertainment!  I love an action-adventure movie that involves exploration. The quest for knowledge where nobody has looked before.  So, without further ado, let's cut to the chase and get down to my TEN absolute favorite, very best of the best, top 10 action-adventure films of all time.

Roll it!

TOP TEN BEST ACTION-ADVENTURE MOVIES EVER

1. Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
Courageous quote: "Asps... very dangerous. You go first. "

Steven Spielberg's brilliant action adventure classic from the early 1980s is my favorite of the genre. It captures everything that makes this type of film so enjoyable to watch. It's got globe trotting adventures, the intellectual curiosity of archaeology, and the wartime setting with evil Nazis to provide villainy. It's got friendship, it's got humor, it's even got a dash of romance. What more could an adventure movie possibly pack into a mere 2 hours of entertaining. In my opinion, this movie is the adventure movie against which all others should be judged.

2. Aguirre: The Wrath of God (1972)
Fightin' words quote: "That man is a head taller than me. That may change. "

Men seek adventure for different reasons. Some seek fame, some do it for king and crown, some do it for the thrills and excitement. Some seek knowledge, most would rather have treasure. Don Lope de Aguirre, a Spanish conquistador, is definitely among those seeking treasure. He seizes command of an expedition party and heads down the mighty Amazon River, searching for the mythical city of El Dorado and all the riches it promises. Along the way, Aguirre confronts not only the unimaginable dangers of a savage, untamed jungle, but also the treachery and despair that lurks in mens' hearts, just beyond the corner of the next heartbreaking challenge.

3. Lord of the Ring: Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Huh quote: "I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve. "

Movie patrons could be excused in the years prior to 2001 if they didn't know who Peter Jackson was, but not after the director came out with the first installment in his cinematic interpretation of J.R.R. Tolkein's epic tale of the Lord of the Rings. Tolkein's work was an astounding piece of fantasy literature: it not only told of an epic struggle between good and evil, it presented us with a richly complex "other world", populated by a range of man-like species, including cerebral elves, mighty dwarves, stalwart men, and evil orcs. Each species with a fully developed culture that included history, literature, music and traits, different from the others. All were subject to the power of great rings, forged long ago --- especially the one ring that controlled them all.

4. Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl
(2003)
Sneaky quote: "This is just like what the Greeks done at Troy. 'Cept they was in a horse instead o' dresses. Wooden 'orse. "

I don't always like Johnny Depp as an actor, but Captain Jack Sparrow is a role he was born to play. Depp infuses Sparrow's character with a complex, almost psychotic unpredictability with nuances of androgyny. Pirates of the Caribbean is a fun romp through the sometimes mystical stories that surround piracy and skulduggery on the high seas. There's chase scenes, swordplay, and even a dash of romantic interest to capture the hearts of any audience.  Great entertainment with nonstop action.

------------------

5. Jurassic Park (1993)
Optimistic quote: "I'm always on the lookout for a future ex-Mrs. Malcolm. "

Great casting and dinosaurs that actually looked real enough to constitute a credible nightmare were what made Spielberg's dino-driven adventure park film into one of the biggest blockbusters of the 90s.  Chemistry and chaos have their way despite the best intentions of the park's founders. Sparing no expense is no guarantee against greed, deception and the powers of nature and extinction.

------------------

6. The African Queen
(1951)
Efficient quote: "By the authority vested in me by Kaiser Wilhelm the second, I pronounce you man and wife. Proceed with the execution. "

It's hard to imagine it today, but a century ago, the darkest inner jungles of Africa were as difficult to reach as the moon would be today. Few intrepid souls would venture into the deepest jungles, yet that's just where Reverend Sayer and his sister, Rosie (Katherine Hepburn), went to save souls and spread the word of the Bible. At least until German troops destroyed the mission. When Sayer died, Charley Allnut (Humphrey Bogart) agrees to get her out of the jungle on his tramp river steamer. Conflict ensues, romance blooms, and adventure down an unnavigable river leads to the movie's explosive conclusion.

------------------

7. The Right Stuff (1983)
Right-on quote:  "The first American into space is not going to be a chimpanzee. I want test pilots! "

Imagine what Christopher Colombus must have felt sailing westwards into the unknown when the prevailing philosophy was that the world was flat and he'd eventually fall off the edge of the world.  Would the first test pilots in the new age of manned rocketry feel a similar sense of foreboding doom when they sat atop their pillar of explosives, waiting to be blasted out beyond Earth's atmosphere for the first time.  "The Right Stuff" tells the tales of America's early pioneers in the space race as the Mercury space program gets on its feet. There's nail biting suspense, and if you love the courage of these early space pioneers, you'll also want to watch Apollo 13 --- itself a great movie and a spectacular adventure.

------------------

8. The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
Insulting quote: "You'll sweat the lard out of that fat carcass of yours before this day is over, my pudgy friend. "

I can't imagine an action-adventure movie list without at least one classic Errol Flynn swashbuckler. In this classic tale, Flynn is Robin of Loxley, loyalist to King Richard and pain in the hindquarters of Richard's would-be usurper, Prince John (not to be confused with Little John, one of Robin's band of merry men). From storming the castle to rescue Lady Miriam to the climatic sword duel between Robin and Sir Guy, the action is pure rollercoaster. Great flick!

------------------

9. The Gods Must Be Crazy
(1981)
Triumphant quote: "Xi was beginning to think he would never find the end of the earth. And then one day, suddenly, there it was. "

In most adventure movies, someone from the "civilized world" (i.e., someplace like where you and I live) goes out into the great unknown in search of fame, fortune, answers and a sense of adventure.  "The Gods Must be Crazy" turns that notion upside down.  What if it is *OUR* culture into which an outsider is suddenly thrust? And so it is with Xi, a Kalahari Bushman who lives a contented life free of conflict, until one day when the Gods (i.e., somebody in an airplane) throws a Coke bottle out the window, where it lands in Bushman country. Life as the Bushmen knew it suddenly becomes conflicted, until they realize they must throw the evil play toy of the Gods off the end of the Earth. Along the way, you just might learn some valuable insight: like how to get the Anti-Christ out of a tree....

------------------

10. Fantastic Voyage (1966)
Arrogant quote: "Man is the center of the universe. We stand in the middle of infinity between outer and inner space, and there's no limit to either."

Intrigue on both the smallest and largest scales as a submarine crew are miniaturized and injected into a scientist's blood stream on a mission to remove a clot from his brain. As the sub and crew journey through the human body, they must overcome obstacles unlike anything they've ever experienced before. Can they succeed in their mission of medical mercy before the miniaturization effects wear off?
